In Michigan, Donald Trump Doubles Down on Failed Economic Policies
January 13, 2026

Today, Donald Trump travelled to Michigan to try to sell his failed economic policies, which are raising costs for Michiganders and destroying thousands of jobs across the state. Trump’s trip comes the same day as a new Detroit News poll that found that nearly two-thirds of Michiganders said they are seeing their household costs increase under Trump — and twice as many gave Trump an “F” grade for handling the economy as gave him an “A.”
Michigan voters are souring on Trump because they know his Big Ugly Bill and chaotic economic agenda have been a complete disaster for Michigan. Hardworking families are paying over $1,000 more per year, while billionaires continue to see the largest tax handout in modern history. Hundreds of thousands of Michiganders will lose their health care, while thousands more are seeing their premiums double and triple. Trump’s health care disaster will also cost over 4,000 jobs across the state.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Under Donald Trump’s failed economic policies, Michiganders are seeing their paychecks get tighter, and jobs disappear. And today, Trump tried to gaslight Michigan families once again — but they weren’t fooled — because new polling shows that Donald Trump is disastrously unpopular in Michigan. While Donald Trump keeps choosing billionaires and gilded ballrooms over the needs of hardworking Michigan families, Democrats won’t stop fighting to lower families’ costs and keep health care prices in check.”
Donald Trump’s policies have been a complete disaster for Michigan
Trump’s policies cost Michigan families over $1,000.
- The median Michigan family will lose $1,060 per year due to Trump’s Big Ugly Bill and chaotic tariffs.
- Trump’s Big Ugly Bill also cuts SNAP benefits for almost 800,000 Michigan families who rely on the program to afford groceries, which continue to cost more due to Trump’s tariffs.
Trump’s agenda is causing health care costs to skyrocket in Michigan.
- 300,000 Michigan families will lose their health care because of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.
- Because Trump also refuses to extend enhanced ACA tax credits, premiums are doubling on average for over 470,000 Michiganders this year, and 90,000 Michiganders will lose their health care entirely.
- The Big Ugly Bill also puts four rural hospitals on the brink of closure.
Trump’s health care crisis is also costing thousands of Michiganders their jobs.
- 4,400 Michiganders will lose their jobs if Trump refuses to extend enhanced ACA tax credits.
