In The Battlegrounds: Democrats Call Out Trump’s Health Care Record As New SCOTUS Case Looms
March 2, 2020
In response to the Supreme Court’s announcement it will review a Trump-backed lawsuit to overturn the entire Affordable Care Act, Democrats across the battlegrounds slammed Trump for his broken health care promises — jeopardizing coverage for tens of millions, eliminating protections for people with pre-existing conditions, spiking costs and proposing major cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.
See for yourself:
FLORIDA DEMOCRATS: “Donald Trump has spent an outrageous amount of time and energy attempting to dismantle the Affordable Care Act that millions of Floridans rely on for affordable health care. Trump is coming back to Florida to fundraise this weekend, and I hope he will explain why he doesn’t have a replacement plan for the 3.5 million Floridians with pre-existing conditions that are currently protected by the law he went to court to sabotage.” — Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo.
OHIO DEMOCRATS: “Since Donald Trump came into office, Ohio’s uninsured rate has gone up, and the number of uninsured Ohio kids has surged. That’s because Trump and the GOP have never had a plan for health care — this lawsuit that he’s cheerleading is the Republican plan. It will rip coverage away from more than half a million Ohioans who are covered under the Medicaid expansion, take protections away from nearly five million Ohioans with pre-existing conditions and put as many as one-fourth of Ohio’s hospitals at risk for closure. In December, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost claimed that ‘Ohioans can breathe easier’ now. Nothing could be further from the truth. The situation is dire, and Republicans are closer than ever to their goal of overturning the Affordable Care Act and taking away coverage from millions of Americans.” — Ohio Democratic Party Chair David Pepper.
MICHIGAN DEMOCRATS: “Donald Trump has broken his promise to protect Michiganders’ health care by leading the charge in a relentless attack on the Affordable Care Act. For over three years, Trump has made it his mission to repeal the ACA so he can gut protections for those with pre-existing conditions and slash Medicaid funding. When he couldn’t repeal it in Congress, he took his fight to the courts in a desperate attempt to strip health care from millions. Make no mistake about it, health care is on the ballot this November and Michigan’s working families cannot afford four more years of Donald Trump’s war on the ACA.” — Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes.
WISCONSIN DEMOCRATS: “Wisconsinites’ health care will be on the ballot in 2020, and it’s vital that the tens of millions of Americans who rely on the Affordable Care Act — especially for those with pre-existing conditions — know if this legislation will still be law heading into the presidential election. President Donald Trump has broken his promise to lower health care costs and protect people with pre-existing conditions and his Department of Justice is continuing to lead the charge to repeal this bill and put millions of Americans at risk. What’s more is Trump has stacked the courts with judges who are hostile to the ACA and further jeopardize its existence. Regardless of the outcome, Democrats will continue to pass legislation that lowers health insurance prescription drug costs, while making sure people with pre-existing conditions are protected.” — Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler.
PENNSYLVANIA DEMOCRATS: “Time and again, Donald Trump has broken his promise to protect the health care of everyday Pennsylvanians. He already tried to repeal the ACA with no replacement, and now his lawsuit risks undermining the entire law this year. With hospitals closing around Pennsylvania and the coronavirus on our shores, we are facing a national health crisis in this country — and he’s still trying to take away your family’s health care. It’s shameful, disastrous, and ineffective leadership. Unlike Trump, Pennsylvania Democrats care about the well-being of you and your family. That’s why we’re working around the clock to defeat him this November.” — Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Patton Mills.
NEW HAMPSHIRE DEMOCRATS: “Donald Trump has broken every promise he’s made when it comes to providing Granite Staters with quality, affordable health care, and every Republican running for Senate against Jeanne Shaheen supports him. Republicans want to gut the ACA, and even worse, they have no backup plan, risking the health insurance for tens of thousands in New Hampshire.” — New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley.
IOWA DEMOCRATS: “If this lawsuit is successful, more than 187,000 Iowans will lose their health coverage, insurance companies will be able to deny coverage for 1.3 million Iowans with pre-existing conditions, Iowans across the state will have to pay more for out-of-pocket and prescription drugs, and rural hospitals across the state could be at risk for closure.” — Iowa Democratic Party Chair Mark Smith.
NEW MEXICO DEMOCRATS: “Now that the future of the Affordable Care Act is once again uncertain, the president’s broken promises are going to have more of an impact than ever. Since day one, Donald Trump has been attempting to dismantle the ACA without offering any solution for the hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans who rely on this law for health care coverage. We cannot afford another four years of reckless attacks on our health care, and that’s exactly why New Mexicans are excited to go to the polls in November and elect a president who understands that health care is a human right.” — Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Marg Elliston.
MAINE DEMOCRATS: “Senator Collins voted to put our health care at risk so her corporate special interest donors could get a tax break. Her indifference to the needs of everyday Mainers who depend on access to affordable care is exactly why Maine Democrats are ready to defeat Senator Collins in November and elect a new Senator who will fight for every Mainer.” — Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra.
NEVADA DEMOCRATS: “The Trump Administration has worked since day one to undermine the Affordable Care Act and rip health care away from hundreds of thousands of Nevadans. Since taking office, Trump made it his top priority to end protections for patients with pre-existing conditions and to make it harder for Nevada families to receive the care they deserve. Under Democratic leadership, our state codified protections for the more than 1.2 million Nevadans with pre-existing conditions because we know Republicans can’t be trusted with our health care. That’s why our state rejected Trump’s cronies in 2018 and will, once again, reject him in November.” — Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Molly Forgey.
NORTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATS: “Health care is on the ballot this November – and North Carolina will hold President Trump and Senator Tillis accountable for working nonstop to tear down the Affordable Care Act and vital protections North Carolina families rely on. Their reckless lawsuit would end protections for people with pre-existing conditions and send health care costs skyrocketing. With the president and Senator Tillis in Charlotte today, they must explain to every North Carolinian family why they will not stop attacking their health care.” — North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Goodwin.
