LIES vs. FACTS: Trump is Gutting Medicaid and Jacking Up Prescription Drug Costs

Here’s the reality: Under Donald Trump’s latest executive order sham, many Americans will not see any savings on their medications, and his plans to slash health care access will only make the problem worse. From Day One, Trump has rolled back efforts to lower drug costs for Americans and fired the lawyers defending Medicare’s drug price cuts, and is now putting Medicaid on the chopping block. Trump’s broken promises speak for themselves — he will always put working families last.

FACT: Donald Trump’s “Most Favored Nation” executive order is unlikely to lower costs for the most common prescription drugs.

CNBC: “White House officials did not disclose which medications the order will apply to. …

“It’s unclear how effective the policy will be at lowering costs for patients.”

Associated Press: “More common prescription drugs filled at a pharmacy would probably not be covered by the new order.”

ABC News: “Trump has played up the announcement, saying it will save taxpayers big money. …

“But many Americans won’t see the savings.”

FACT: Trump wants to cut Medicaid and jeopardize health care for 79 million Americans

White House: “The following executive actions are hereby revoked:

“Executive Order 14009 of January 28, 2021 (Strengthening Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act).”

Sarah Ferris, CNN: “House budget plan is out. Besides 2 years of debt limit + $4.5T in tax cuts and $200B in border, there’s BIG news for fiscal hawks

It calls for $2T in *mandatory* cuts, aka Medicaid, since Trump has ruled out Medicare/SS”

Trump: “[T]he House Resolution implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it! We need both Chambers to pass the House Budget

FACT: Trump signed an executive order rescinding the Biden-Harris order to lower drug costs.

White House: “The following executive actions are hereby revoked:

“Executive Order 14087 of October 14, 2022 (Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for Americans).”

Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services: “President Biden issued Executive Order (EO) 14087, ‘Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for Americans,’ to further address prescription drug affordability through the work of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (the Innovation Center). The Innovation Center tests innovative payment and service delivery models designed to reduce program expenditures while preserving or enhancing the quality of care furnished to its beneficiaries.”

FACT: Trump fired the lawyers defending Medicare’s ability to negotiate lower drug prices against Big Pharma attacks.

Bloomberg: “HHS Lays Off Lawyers Executing the Medicare Drug Price Cuts”

“At least three government lawyers working on defending a major Biden-era drug pricing law were laid off in mass cuts across the agency this month, according to a source familiar with the terminations.

The attorneys were doing legal work implementing and defending the Inflation Reduction Act, a law that allows Medicare to directly negotiate down the price of drugs for the first time. Medicare is facing an onslaught of lawsuits filed by pharmaceutical companies and their allies …

Terminations were led by the Department of Government Efficiency, the Elon Musk-led team

[F]iring attorneys leaves HHS fewer resources to continue implementing and defending the law, the person familiar said. Beyond the lawsuits, pharmaceutical companies have pressured the Trump administration to pause the drug price negotiations that began during the Biden administration.”
