Like Clockwork: Trump Uses A Mass Shooting For Personal Gain
August 8, 2019
Yesterday, Trump managed to make his visits to victims of the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings all about himself. If you were surprised, then you haven’t been paying attention. Trump has repeatedly exploited mass shootings for his personal gain.
Trump boasted that his poll numbers went up after mass shootings.
Trump: “It is interesting, because every time there is a horrible act, and this is a shame in many respects, but from the standpoint of what happens, every time a really bad act takes place, like Paris — it happened with Paris, it happens now — my cold and was go up – my poll numbers go up.”
Washington Post: “Early Thursday morning, Trump did it again. This time, he retweeted a supporter who pretty clearly appeared to suggest that the shootings in San Bernardino, Calif., on Wednesday — shootings that killed 14 and injured 17 — would help Trump’s ‘poll numbers.’”
Following the shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Trump bragged “I was right” and “appreciate the congrats for being right.”
Trump: “Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!”
Trump: “I’m getting thousands of letters and tweets that I was right about the whole situation.”
Trump: “I have been getting thousands and thousands of tweets and letters and phone calls that I was right, congratulations. […] I was right, and I have been right, and I am right.”
Trump’s administration used the San Bernardino shooting to try to justify his Muslim ban.
CNN: “A senior Trump administration official on Saturday pointed to the 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, to justify the President’s order to ban US immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations.”
Trump suggested President Obama was complicit in the Orlando shooting.
Washington Post: “Donald Trump seemed to repeatedly accuse President Obama on Monday of identifying with radicalized Muslims who have carried out terrorist attacks in the United States and being complicit in the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando over the weekend, the worst the country has ever seen… In that same interview, Trump was asked to explain why he called for Obama to resign in light of the shooting and he answered, in part: ‘He doesn’t get it or he gets it better than anybody understands — it’s one or the other and either one is unacceptable.’”
Trump used the Orlando shooting to attack President Obama for being “weak” and to attack Muslims.
Trump: “You have many, many people, thousands of people, already in our country, that are sick with hate. And people that are around him, Muslims, know who they are, largely. They know who they are. They have to turn them in.”
New York Times: “Mr. Trump wasted no time in casting the massacre as evidence of the accuracy of his warnings about the threat America faced and the Obama administration’s ineptitude. ‘Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism,’ he wrote on Twitter on Sunday. Though he also said he did not want to be congratulated, he issued a statement again patting himself on the back: ‘Because our leaders are weak, I said this was going to happen — and it is only going to get worse.’”
After the shooting of police officers in Baton Rouge, Trump suggested “there’s something going on” with Obama’s support of police.
