MAGA Hot Mic: Arizona’s Abortion Ban With No Rape or Incest Exceptions
September 26, 2022
Today’s MAGA hot moment features Arizona where a dangerous abortion ban went into effect over the weekend.
A Pima County Superior Court judge reinstated a 1901 law banning abortion in Arizona with no exceptions for rape or incest.
Axios: “A Pima County judge lifted an injunction Friday that allowed a pre-statehood law banning almost all abortions to take effect.”
New York Times: “A judge on Friday ruled that a near-total abortion ban written before Arizona became a state must be enforced, throwing abortion access into question one day before the start of a 15-week ban that passed the Legislature this year.”
The draconian law even threatens health care providers with prison time for providing vital reproductive care.
New York Times: “The 1864 law, first established by the state’s territorial legislature, mandates a two- to five-year prison sentence for anyone who helps a woman obtain an abortion. In 1901, the law was updated and codified.”
Washington Post: “The Arizona law threatens abortion providers with between two and five years in prison. It originated from a 1864 law and has no exception for victims of rape or incest.”
This law furthers what extreme Arizona Republicans and MAGA candidates have called for all along – for women in Arizona to no longer have the freedom to make their own health care decisions.
CNN: “Arizona GOP Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who led the legal process to try to get the state’s pre-statehood ban on abortion put back into effect after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in late June, tweeted that he was pleased by the decision”
Arizona Republic’s Laurie Roberts: “Even if a federal judge rules that abortion remains legal, it’s a given that it’ll soon be outlawed if Kari Lake becomes governor. Next year’s Legislature looks be more conservative than the current crew and Lake has said she supports the territorial law…”
AZ Family: “PolitiFact: Senate candidate Blake Masters backs 15-week Arizona abortion law with no rape, incest exceptions
Republican lawmakers in Arizona, and across the country, are keeping their promise that overturning Roe was just the beginning, and they will push to further restrict reproductive rights across the country. This is what’s at stake come November.
