Today’s MAGA Hot Mic moment features Michigan Republican lawmakers reportedly using taxpayer money for their own political ends. 

Michigan’s GOP lawmakers are so hellbent on banning abortion that they’ve spent more than $100,000 in taxpayer dollars on legal services in an attempt to revive Michigan’s draconian 1931 abortion ban, which is currently unenforceable.

Michigan Advance: “More than $180,000 of taxpayer money has been used for legal services to defend Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban. That’s according to the liberal advocacy group Progress Michigan, which submitted financial disclosure requests to the Michigan House and Senate Business Offices to determine what public resources are being spent by the Republican-controlled legislature to try and uphold the law in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.”

The legislation in question is extreme and dangerous — banning nearly all abortions and even threatening health care workers with felony charges. 

Michigan Advance: “The law provides no exceptions for rape, incest or the mother’s health — only to save the life of the ‘pregnant woman.’”

NPR: “Michigan’s dormant abortion law would threaten abortion providers with felony charges.”

CNN: “The law threatens abortion providers with prison time, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan.”

The Michigan GOP has been relentless in their push to ban abortion and punish providers. When Democratic lawmakers moved to repeal the draconian 1931 law once and for all, Michigan Republicans shot it down.

Michigan Advance: “Republicans who control the state House on Wednesday shut down an attempt from Democrats to tie-bar every bill being considered to a measure that would repeal Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban, declaring the effort ‘dilatory.’”

Republican lawmakers in Michigan — and across the country — continue to make clear that they will stop at nothing to push their extreme, anti-choice agenda.
