MAGA Republicans Fall in Line To Support Trump’s Call for a Government Shutdown

Another day, another news cycle making Donald Trump’s influence over MAGA House Republicans clear. New reporting shows some extreme House GOP members falling in line and echoing Trump’s calls for a government shutdown if their laundry list of extreme partisan demands isn’t met.

New reporting shows the latest on MAGA House Republicans throwing their support behind Trump’s call to shut down the government.

Punchbowl News: “Several House conservatives are rallying around former President Donald Trump’s repeated calls to oppose a short-term stopgap funding bill as Congress faces a government shutdown deadline in just five days.

[…]

And Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) phoned Trump during a town hall event on Friday. Greene talked about her opposition to any CR that doesn’t include new border security provisions. The Georgia Republican also wants to bar any new Ukraine funding and defund the DOJ and FBI.

It’s no secret that Trump, the leading GOP contender in the 2024 presidential election, still has enormous influence over rank-and-file Republicans. Trump has consistently supported the House’s hardline conservatives this Congress, although he also backed Kevin McCarthy’s ascent to speaker in January.”

Just this morning, Trump’s latest call to arms to congressional Republicans was to “SHUT IT DOWN” if their extreme MAGA budget demands aren’t met.

Sahil Kapur, NBC News: “Donald Trump’s new instruction to congressional Republicans on government funding: ‘UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN!’

(Worth remembering, Trump forced a 35-day shutdown over wall money as president but ultimately caved and reopened gov’t after getting nothing.)”

If it wasn’t clear enough, certain House Republicans are making it painfully obvious that Trump is pulling their strings in the midst of the extreme MAGA shutdown chaos.

Matt Gaetz: “Trump agrees with me

Not

@SpeakerMcCarthy

No Continuing Resolution

Break the Fever

Hold the Line”

Andy Ogles: “THANK YOU @realDonaldTrump for your support.

NO CR 🇺🇸

1. Pass the 12 Appropriations Bills

2. Secure Border

3. Debt Commission to Cut Spending

4. Release J6 Tapes

5. Defund DA Jack Smith & Sec Mayorkas”

And what hangs in the balance — which Trump and some House Republicans don’t seem to care about — is how a government shutdown would affect working families and our nation’s economic stability.

Axios: “More than half of American adults say a shutdown of the federal government would affect them personally — and 68% say the threat of one decreases their trust in the government, a new survey says.”

Erik Wasson, Bloomberg: “*US GOV SHUTDOWN WOULD BE `NEGATIVE’ FOR RATING, MOODY’S SAYS”

Axios: “Driving the news: 91% of small business owners surveyed from Aug. 29 to Sept. 7 said it’s important for the federal government to avert a government shutdown, according to the latest Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Voices survey. 70% said their business would be negatively impacted and of those, 93% believe their revenue would take a hit.”
