MAGA Republicans Want to Defund Law Enforcement

While MAGA Republicans hold their latest political stunt, let’s not forget their real record of voting against funding for police, pushing to cut law enforcement funding, and voting against measures to stop gun violence.

Despite what Republicans say today, the truth is that every Republican in Congress voted against police funding passed thanks to President Biden and Democrats’ American Rescue Plan.

Many of those same Republicans supported Trump’s budget plan that would have cut funding to the COPS Program — a program that provides funding to state and local law enforcement agencies.

Wall Street Journal: “The [Trump] administration’s 2021 budget, like all its previous budgets, recommended eliminating the Community Relations Services and Community Oriented Policing Services and placing their functions under other parts of the department to ‘improve efficiency.’”

And since then, led by Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis, Republican lawmakers have pushed extreme cuts to law enforcement which would make communities across the country less safe.

Sahil Kapur, NBC News: “Donald Trump pressures Republicans to defund the (federal) police.”

Jonathan Allen, NBC News: “When Trump was president, he proposed slashing federal funding for local police forces.”

Punchbowl: “According to Biden administration estimates … Roughly 11,000 FBI personnel could be laid off.”

Axios: “Top House conservatives are targeting the budgets of federal law enforcement agencies such as the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as part of their scrutiny of the ‘weaponization’ of the federal government, as Axios has reported.”

The same MAGA Republicans grandstanding today have refused to lift a finger for common sense reforms to prevent gun violence endangering American families.

ABC: “House Speaker Kevin McCarthy repeatedly refuses to answer questions on the deadly mass shooting at a school in Nashville that killed six people, including three children.”

CBS: “The House on Friday approved bipartisan gun legislation that was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate late the night before, sending it to President Biden for his signature. … Democrats broadly supported the plan, but House Republican leaders encouraged their GOP members to oppose the legislation.”
