Mike Johnson Says He Wants to Protect IVF From Anti-Choice Extremists Like Mike Johnson

In response to MAGA Mike Johnson shamelessly trying to claim he supports IVF after backing legislation that could rip away access to it nationwide, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Facts are facts: the sky is blue, the ocean is wet, and Mike Johnson has spent his entire career pushing an extreme anti-choice agenda including legislation that could rip away access to IVF. Johnson is a terrible liar, trying and failing to run from his own unpopular record working to outlaw abortion nationwide and take away access to IVF from Americans trying to start a family. But the truth is that if given the chance, Johnson and the rest of his MAGA allies will keep putting Americans’ basic rights on the chopping block, from abortion to birth control to IVF treatments.”

Facing backlash for the consequences of their own policymaking, MAGA Republicans, including MAGA Mike Johnson, are attempting to spin their record on IVF. But Johnson literally co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act, which DOES NOT include any exception for in vitro fertilization – and could rip away access to IVF treatment from families who desperately want a baby.

Business Insider: “Most House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are ‘unborn children.’

“This Congress, 125 House Republicans — including Speaker Mike Johnson — have cosponsored the ‘Life at Conception Act,’ which states that the term ‘human being’ includes ‘all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.’

“The bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.”

NBC News: “But with the landmark Roe ruling protecting those rights gone, efforts by conservative lawmakers and judges to advance fetal personhood bills pose a real threat to some fertility treatments, including IVF, reproductive rights advocates say.”

Let’s not forget that MAGA Mike Johnson has a long record of refusing to let women make their own health care decisions.

Johnson: “🚨🚨BREAKING: Late yesterday, the La. Department of Health informed abortion facilities in our state that the right to life has now been RESTORED!

Perform an abortion and get imprisoned at hard labor for 1-10 yrs & fined $10K-$100K.”

Jezebel: “[Johnson] expressed hope that Roe v. Wade would someday be overturned, railed against people supposedly ‘using abortion as birth control’ and appeared to blame school shootings on abortion: ‘When you break up the nuclear family, when you tell a generation of people that life has no value, no meaning, that it’s expendable, then you do wind up with school shooters.’”

Johnson is a MAGA minion merely parroting his leader, Donald Trump, who also refuses to own up to his own role in stopping IVF treatment in Alabama because of HIS hand-picked justices overturning Roe v. Wade.

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Business Insider: “Trump boasts he’s ‘proud’ about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, the issue that has become ballot-box poison for Republicans”

Trump campaign radio ad: “And Trump nominated conservative judges, leading to Roe v. Wade being overturned.”

FWIW: “This week, we found more evidence that the Trump campaign has no interest in ‘moderating’ on the issue of abortion. On Monday, his team began running new Facebook video ads targeting voters in Iowa, referring to Trump as ‘THE MOST Pro-Life President in history.’”
