NEW POLLING: Americans Can’t Afford This Holiday Season Because of Trump’s Disastrous Economy
December 18, 2025

New polling found that under Donald Trump’s failing economy, most Americans are struggling to afford this holiday season. Shoppers report that prices are higher than last year, forcing them to cut back on spending. The polling comes as no surprise, with holiday items averaging 26% higher than last year, while prices on groceries, electricity, and health care rise.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“While Donald Trump hits primetime television to tout that he has ‘lowered prices’ and ‘fixed inflation,’ millions of Americans are wondering how they will afford this holiday season. Americans are already struggling with soaring costs and job losses, and now they’re worrying about how they’ll afford health care next year. Yet Trump has the audacity to tell working families to buy fewer toys for their kids to get through the holidays — as he doubles down on his reckless trade war that’s raising prices. Trump doesn’t care about everyday Americans — he only cares about himself.”
Just last night in his address to the nation, Trump tried to explain away his failing economy — but Americans aren’t buying it. This holiday season, Trump successfully jacked up costs and triggered mass layoffs, despite promising to lower prices on “Day One.” To make matters worse, two-thirds of analysts in a recent survey predicted even higher prices next year. Inflation-adjusted wages have only increased 0.3% in the three quarters since Trump took office, after increasing nearly 2% in the three quarters before Trump took office. It’s no wonder Trump’s approval rating on the economy just hit a new low of 36%.
