NRSC Goes On The Record Defending Raising Taxes on Half of Americans and Sunsetting Social Security

Despite some Republicans’ attempts to distance themselves from National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Rick Scott’s plan to raise taxes on over half of Americans and sunset Social Security and Medicare, NRSC staff are going on the record to defend the plan and more and more Senate candidates are also jumping on board.

NRSC Communications Director Chris Hartline defended Senator Scott’s plan as a platform for Republican candidates in 2022:

Politico: “Chris Hartline, Scott’s spokesperson, reiterated the senator’s point that he released the proposal in his personal capacity because he believes voters want to see a policy plan from Republicans to run on. Like Scott, Hartline contended that the tax plank would encourage people who are able-bodied to seek work. He argued that sunsetting programs and requiring reauthorization by Congress is ‘common sense’ policy.”

But they aren’t the only ones – one by one, Senate Republican candidates are lining up to support Senator Scott’s plan to raise taxes on the American people:

Daily Beast: “His ideas have quietly gotten some love from an important audience: prominent Republicans who are running for Senate.”

Daily Beast: “At least four GOP candidates in the most important battleground states this fall have either explicitly expressed support for Scott’s plan or have campaigned on the political views that form the foundation of his platform.”

Daily Beast: “And while Scott’s proposal to make all Americans pay some federal income tax—to have some, in his words, ‘skin in the game’—was denounced by many Republicans, at least one leading candidate, Mike Gibbons of Ohio, had already taken up that same mantle.”
