Perez On Bipartisan Calls For Independent Special Prosecutor
May 10, 2017
In response to a growing coalition of bipartisan legislators calling for independent investigations into the Trump campaign’s potential involvement in Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee Tom Perez released the following:
“As a former Justice Department prosecutor, I applaud the growing call from legislators, of both parties, for independent investigations of this critical national security issue. The first step in this process is the appointment of a special prosecutor to oversee the Justice Department’s work on this investigation free from the influence of Donald Trump and his associates. The firing of FBI Director James Comey makes clear Trump wants to see this investigation just magically disappear, but the American people won’t let that happen. During his confirmation hearings Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein agreed to appoint a special prosecutor if one was required. There is no more appropriate time than now.”
