REMINDER: Americans Really Want a Big Infrastructure Plan…and Agree That Corporations Should Pay for It

In poll after poll, including the National Republican Congressional Committee’s leaked internal polling that they hid from their own members, Americans believe that it is past time to make massive investments in our infrastructure. Support for these investments increases when voters hear investments would be financed by large corporations.

A look at the numbers:

Washington Post: “A recent poll by the National Republican Congressional Committee, released to GOP members of Congress and obtained by The Washington Post, uncovered just how palatable higher taxes are among voters if they feed the populist anger against wealthy interests. Voters in battleground House districts were split on Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure proposal. When it was noted the plan would be paid for ‘by raising corporate taxes and raising taxes on the wealthiest families,’ support for it grew by six points, to 56 percent.”

Washington Post: “Biden has proposed paying for the infrastructure plan by raising the corporate tax rate, which once stood at 35 percent but was lowered to 21 percent during Trump’s presidency. Biden has recommended that it be raised to 28 percent, and the new poll shows that 58 percent of Americans say they support the increase.”

CBS News: “To pay for infrastructure, most Americans would favor raising taxes on both large corporations and people making over $400,000 annually — seven in 10 each. Both of these measures find support among approximately half of Republicans, as well as large majorities of Democrats and independents. By contrast, only four in 10 Americans would support raising taxes specifically on people who use roads and bridges more.”

Quinnipiac Poll: “Support grows for the infrastructure plan if it is funded by raising taxes on corporations, as Biden has proposed. In that scenario, a majority support the infrastructure plan 53 – 39 percent, with 9 percent not offering an opinion.”

Fox Business: “Nearly half favor Biden’s $2 trillion dollar infrastructure plan (49-41 percent), and majorities favor paying for that plan by increasing taxes either on businesses and corporations (56-39 percent) or families earning over $400,000 a year (63-33 percent).
