REMINDER: Mike Pence Wants to Cut Medicare and End Social Security As We Know It

Pence has a long history of wanting to put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block — and it comes as no surprise that he’s made slashing these essential programs a central feature of his 2024 presidential run.

Pence has doubled down on his plans to gut Social Security and Medicare as he’s prepared for an official 2024 presidential run.

Semafor: “Mike Pence isn’t running from his old fiscal conservatism. Instead, he’s seemingly leaning into it by talking about privatizing Social Security, an idea the party largely abandoned after a politically damaging push in 2005.

“‘I think the day could come where we can replace the New Deal with a Better Deal,’ he said during an interview in February. ‘Literally give younger Americans the ability to take a portion of their Social Security withholdings and put that into a private savings account that the government would oversee.’”

New York Times: “Mr. Pence says Social Security and Medicare must be trimmed back as part of any serious plan to deal with the national debt.”

Yahoo News: “Pence calls for Social Security reform, private savings accounts”

Months before he was even an announced candidate, Pence wasted no time in calling to partially privatize Social Security — making it one of his first policy proposals.

Pence: “I think the day could come when we could replace the New Deal with a better deal. Literally give younger Americans the ability to take a portion of their Social Security withholdings and put that into a private savings account.”

Let’s not forget that Pence stood behind Trump as he proposed slashing Social Security and Medicare programs EVERY SINGLE YEAR he was in office.

Washington Post: “Each of [Trump’s] White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.”
