DeSantis has one of the most extreme, anti-choice records in the 2024 Republican field. In Florida, he signed one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country, and now, he’s running for president on that same extreme agenda.

DeSantis signed one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country that bans the procedure before many women even know they’re pregnant.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel: “Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to sign one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country could cost him votes if he runs for president, political operatives said Friday, and doing it in a private event late at night suggests he’s well aware of that. … The bill bans most abortions after six weeks before most women even know they’re pregnant. It provides exceptions for victims of rape or incest for up to 15 weeks but requires they prove it by providing a copy of a restraining order, police report, medical record, or other documents.”

DeSantis refused to rule out signing a national abortion ban and vowed to use federal authority to limit reproductive freedoms.

DeSantis: “I’m a pro-life governor. I’ve signed pro-life legislation. I’ll be a pro-life president. … Of course, there’ll be executive actions.” 

DeSantis: “We were able to sign legislation protecting unborn child with a detectable heartbeat. And we think that that’s a humane thing to do. … Dobbs returned the issue to the elected representatives of the people. And so I think that there’s — there’s role for both the federal and the states.” 

NBC News: “When asked if he would ‘veto any sort of federal bill that tries to put a nationwide ban in place,’ DeSantis replied, ‘We will be a pro-life president and we will support pro-life policies.’”
