Republicans Want to Gut Medicare and Social Security
August 3, 2022
The Social Security and Medicare benefits that millions of Americans rely on are on the line if MAGA Republicans take control – they’ve made that abundantly clear, over and over again.
In an interview airing yesterday, Johnson doubled down on his proposal that could gut Social Security and Medicare for Americans.
Washington Post: “Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has suggested that Social Security and Medicare be eliminated as federal entitlement programs”
Washington Post: “Saying programs like Social Security and Medicare suffer from improper oversight, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson on Tuesday called for turning every government program into discretionary spending programs, meaning Congress would have to allocate funding for the programs each year. Such an effort could lead to yearly battles over the programs.”
Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has now gone on the record several times supporting an agenda that would end the Medicare and Social Security guarantee.
Up North News: “Ron Johnson Thinks a GOP Plan for Tax Increases and the Potential End of Medicare and Social Security Is a ‘Positive Thing’”
Washington Post: “Asked Wednesday whether Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) would support such a plan, a representative for the Kentucky senator pointed to his previous rejection of a proposal by Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) that would have similarly upended Social Security and Medicare. In March, Johnson said he supported ‘most’ of Scott’s plan and called it “a positive thing.”
HuffPost: “[In 2016], Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) described Social Security as a ‘legal Ponzi scheme’ and voiced support for privatizing the program while meeting with conservative activists.”
Johnson’s comments confirm what we already know — the MAGA agenda is simply too dangerous for Americans as both House and Senate Republicans have shown voters that they could gut essential programs like Social Security and Medicare if given the chance.
