Senate Democrats Unified in Demanding Common-Sense Reforms to Hold ICE Accountable

Today, Senate Democrats refused to advance additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security in the wake of the murders of two American citizens at the hands of the agency’s officers, and once again called on Senate Republicans to work with them to put an end to ICE’s reign of terror to ensure Americans’ safety.

Senate Democrats are working to pass the five funding bills that have bipartisan support and make changes to the DHS budget to add common-sense safeguards to rein in ICE’s very real and very dangerous abuses.

The American people support law enforcement, a secure border, and safe communities — but they oppose the tactics ICE has used to terrorize neighborhoods and kill American citizens. Donald Trump is 17 points underwater on the issue of immigration, and a majority of voters — including 62% of independent voters — believe that increases in ICE funding are a bad use of taxpayer dollars.

DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“Senate Democrats are united in doing what is right — refusing to give ICE a blank check with zero accountability. The American people are outraged at the murders of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis and demand an end to the lawlessness and disorder unleashed by Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, and Stephen Miller. As we honor the memories of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, I call on Senate Republicans to find their conscience and work with Democrats to restore safety, justice, and accountability to the Department of Homeland Security.”
