SPECIAL ELECTION: Minnesota Democrats Clinch Two Victories, Ending Republican House Majority
January 27, 2026
Tonight, in the wake of tragedy in Minnesota, Democratic candidates Shelley Buck and Meg Luger-Nikolai clinched victories in their respective Minnesota House District 47A and House District 64A races. With these victories, Democrats successfully ended Republicans’ majority in the state house, ensuring Democrats retain the power they need to fight back against Republicans’ toxic agenda that is raising costs for families and making communities less safe.
Tonight’s victories extend Democratic momentum throughout 2025 and 2026. With these wins, Democrats have now won or overperformed in 239 of 268 key elections since Trump retook office, underscoring the trend of voters in blue, red, and purple districts souring on Trump and, instead, putting their faith in Democrats like Buck and Luger-Nikolai who are fighting to lower costs, defend communities from federal overreach and violence, and protect health care for Minnesota’s working families.
In response to Buck and Luger-Nikolai’s victories, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“My community is hurting — but we are also fighting and showing up, for each other and at the ballot box. With Representative-elect Buck and Luger-Nikolai’s victories, Minnesotans now have two more Democratic champions who will fight to lower costs, protect health care, and protect our community from federal overreach and violence. It’s never been more important that Democrats use every tool at our disposal to stand up to Donald Trump and his spineless allies, especially here in Minnesota, as they try to separate and divide us. While Republicans tank our economy and foment chaos, Democrats are on the side of working families. We will organize and we will win across Minnesota in 2026 and beyond.”
