Statement on the Passing of Cecile Richards
January 20, 2025
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement on the passing of Cecile Richards:
“It is with a heavy heart, great sadness, and fond memories that we mourn the loss of a trailblazing activist and a champion for reproductive freedom, Cecile Richards. As the president of Planned Parenthood, Cecile led the charge to deliver health care to millions of Americans and defend abortion rights for women nationwide. In the face of setbacks and challenges, she stood up to extremism, fought for our families, and never wavered from her dream to create a better country for our daughters and sons.
“Cecile dedicated her life to public service and justice from an early age. The daughter of Texas Governor Ann Richards, she campaigned by her mother’s side to elect women into office. In 2006, she became president of Planned Parenthood, working hard to raise the organization’s profile in the face of bad-faith attacks. As Planned Parenthood battled threats to federal funding, Cecile led with strength and never backed down from a fight. Under her leadership, the organization expanded access to vital health care and opened centers across the country — helping millions of Americans get affordable care and supporting women in their time of need.
“We are blessed to have been graced by Cecile’s passion, intelligence, and courage. While our hearts are broken, we will follow her family’s guidance and honor Cecile’s legacy by doing everything we can to protect our country. Our hearts go out to her loved ones, and we will keep them in our thoughts during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.”
