Sunday Scaries: Donald Trump’s MAGA Minions Double Down on His Attacks on Democracy
August 4, 2024
In response to Donald Trump’s MAGA minions defending his anti-democratic attacks on the Sunday shows today, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:
“In Donald Trump’s MAGA GOP, the rule of law takes a back seat to the rule of Trump. Today, Trump’s MAGA minions continued to spew dangerous election denialism and defend his pledges to pardon violent January 6 insurrectionists – even refusing to rule out helping him overturn the next election. The American people are sick and tired of this kind of shameful, anti-democracy rhetoric, and are ready to stop the Trump-Vance ticket’s all-out assault on our basic rights at the ballot box in November.”
Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance acknowledged that he’s wildly unpopular.
Vance: “I recognize that there are a lot of folks, even in the GOP establishment … who don’t like the fact that Donald Trump picked me … They can call me whatever they want to.”
Markwayne Mullin and Byron Donalds both defended Trump’s pledges to pardon violent January 6 insurrectionists.
Markwayne Mullin: “I believe President Trump will take a look at it and he’ll do what he feels like is best. I have my complete faith in President Trump that he pays attention to every little detail, and he will do what’s right for the American people.”
George Stephanopoulos, ABC News: “Trump also said at the convention that he would pardon January 6 rioters who assaulted police officers. Do you support that?”
Byron Donalds: “Actually, what he said is that he was going to review every single case. He even repeated that again in Chicago at the NABJ. … What he’s talking about is doing a case-by-case review. …”
Stephanopoulos: “I’ll read it to you right now, this was Rachel Scott’s question. ‘My question is on those rioters who assaulted officers. Would you pardon those people?’ ‘Oh, absolutely, I would.’ That’s his words.”
The Hill: “Mullin says Trump will ‘look at the facts’ before pardoning Jan. 6 rioters”
“Trump, however, said explicitly he would pardon rioters who attacked police officers, in an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention on Wednesday.
“‘Absolutely I would. If they’re innocent. If they’re innocent, I would pardon them.’ Trump said when asked by ABC News’s Rachel Scott whether he would pardon rioters who assaulted police officers.”
Mullin also dodged a question on if he’d help Trump overturn the election.
Mullin: “I’m a friend and I’m a loyal friend. If my friend needs me, especially if they’ve done me a favor, I’m going to be all in for them. I’m going to do anything possible to help them, I’m not going to play politics with it.”
Dana Bash, CNN: “Even overturn the election?”
Mullin: “That’s a total separate issue.”
