#TBT: Trump Said GM Would Build In The U.S. Again — It Laid Off 14,000 Workers Instead
September 5, 2019
Today, Trump will meet with General Motors CEO Mary Barra, where he will likely falsely try to take credit for the company planning to build in the U.S. again. How do we know? Because that’s exactly what happened after the last time they met.
After Trump previously met with GM’s CEO, he said GM was planning to build in the U.S. because of him.
Trump: “Call Mary Barra, head of General Motors. You could call Fiat. You know, you could call Fiat. You could call—we had that meeting. They’re all talking about building in the United States because of me.”
Does that mean Trump will take credit for the 14,000 GM jobs lost and 5 GM plants that are closing?
New York Daily News: “The manufacturing motor President Trump vowed to jump start in the nation’s heartland sputtered and stalled Monday when General Motors announced it would cut as many as 14,000 jobs and possibly more — many of them based in the Midwest. The iconic auto manufacturer, which oversees production of Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick, is targeting five plants for possible closure as part of the massive downsizing — just months after it warned that Trump’s tough talk on tariffs could lead to ‘fewer jobs.’”
