This Medicaid Awareness Month, Donald Trump is Plotting To Rip Away Americans’ Health Care

This Medicaid Awareness Month, Donald Trump is still pushing an overwhelmingly unpopular plan to strip health care from millions of Americans, including kids, seniors, and folks in rural communities. At every turn, Republicans have made clear they’re ready to put Medicaid on the chopping block in order to line the pockets of Trump’s billionaire backers.

Donald Trump and his MAGA minions in Congress have repeatedly tried to gut Medicaid and threaten health care for 79 million Americans.

Sarah Ferris, CNN: “House budget plan is out. Besides 2 years of debt limit + $4.5T in tax cuts and $200B in border, there’s BIG news for fiscal hawks

It calls for $2T in *mandatory* cuts, aka Medicaid, since Trump has ruled out Medicare/SS”

Trump: “[T]he House Resolution implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it! We need both Chambers to pass the House Budget

Sahil Kapur: “Chuck Schumer offered an amendment to the Republican budget resolution to prohibit tax cuts for the wealthy if even $1 is cut from Medicaid.

“It was rejected 49-51.

“Democrats unanimously voted YES, joined by Collins and Hawley. Other Republicans voted NO.”

KFF Health News: “Republicans in Washington say they plan to use funding cuts and regulatory changes to dramatically shrink Medicaid, the nearly $900-billion-a-year government health insurance program that, along with the related Children’s Health Insurance Program, serves about 79 million mostly low-income or disabled Americans.

“If the GOP’s plans to shrink Medicaid are realized, Democrats and health experts say, low-income people forced to buy private insurance would face challenges paying monthly premiums and the large copayments and deductibles common to commercial plans that typically don’t exist in Medicaid.”

In his FY18, FY19, FY20, and FY21 budgets, Trump repeatedly proposed hundreds of billions in cuts to Medicaid.

Medicaid cuts would rip away health care access across the country, devastating our children, seniors, and rural communities.

“Medicaid covers almost 80 million people in total – roughly four times as many people as covered by the Affordable Care Act Marketplaces and considerably more than the roughly 48 million seniors covered by Medicare.”

Bloomberg: Rural nursing home closures are a concern for Nate Schema, president and CEO of Good Samaritan, the nation’s largest nonprofit nursing home and senior living provider.

“The society operates 105 nursing homes in eight states that serve about 10,000 residents. In more than a dozen of its rural facilities, about 70% of residents are Medicaid beneficiaries, Schema said.”

Trump’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator nominee, Dr. Mehmet Oz, doubled down on extreme plans to gut Medicaid.

Sen. Ron Wyden: “Will you agree … to oppose any cuts to the Medicaid program?”

Dr. Mehmet Oz: *Dodges*

Sen. Wyden: “That’s not the question, doctor. The question is, will you oppose cuts to this program?”

Dr. Oz: *Dodges again*

Sen. Wyden: “Let the record show that I asked a witness who said he cherishes this program, will you agree to oppose cuts? And he would not answer a yes or no question.”

Garrett Haake: “Buried in Oz announcement is this line which suggests cuts to Medicare may be on the table”
