Tom Perez on Supreme Court Case Attacking Unions
September 28, 2017
DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s granting of certiorari in Janus v. AFSCME, a case that threatens the ability of public sector unions to collect fair share fees for their services:
“Once again, wealthy corporations and their Republican allies are using the Supreme Court to take away the fundamental rights of American workers. Attacking unions is one of the most powerful tools in the Republican playbook to rig the economy against working people. In fact, Republicans are so determined to gut worker protections that they held a Supreme Court seat hostage for nearly 14 months so they could nominate an anti-union judge.
“Democrats believe that when unions succeed, America succeeds – and the evidence is on our side. Study after study has shown that the right to organize and bargain collectively are critical to raising wages, strengthening the middle class, and securing the economic fairness every worker deserves. That’s why Democrats will keep fighting to make sure that workers have a seat at the table and a voice in decision-making – because these fights aren’t just about dollars, they’re about dignity.”
