Tom Perez on West Virginia Teachers’ Victory

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement in response to today’s victory in West Virginia, where teachers organized for and won a pay increase for all public employees:

“Today’s victory by West Virginia’s teachers is a major win for organized labor and our country. We know that when unions succeed, America succeeds, and these teachers proved this once again by courageously standing up, speaking out, and organizing for the higher pay they deserve.

“Of course, we still have a lot of work to do. For decades, Republicans have been chipping away at workers’ rights, weakening unions, depressing wages, and concentrating wealth at the very top. They passed a tax bill that favors the wealthy and big corporations over working families, and they’ve brought their attacks on collective bargaining all the way to the Supreme Court. They won’t let up, and neither can we.

“As Republicans continue their efforts to rig the economy for those at the very top, Democrats are proud to support West Virginia’s teachers, state employees, and all the working people across the country who are joining hands to protect our freedoms and fight for an economy that works for everyone.”
