Trump Admin Downplays Virus As States See Record Increases In New Cases

The Trump administration is once again downplaying coronavirus and lying directly to the American people by claiming there is no risk of a second wave after Trump rushed to reopen the country without adequate safety measures in place. Several states reported record increases in new cases yesterday.

Several states reported record increases in new coronavirus cases yesterday after hitting all-time highs last week.

Reuters: “Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas all reported record increases in new cases on Tuesday after recording all-time highs last week. Nevada also reported its highest single-day tally of new cases on Tuesday, up from a previous high on May 23. Hospitalizations are also rising or at record highs.”

Also yesterday, Mike Pence wrote an op-ed falsely claiming that there was no second wave or surge in coronavirus cases.

PENCE: “The media has tried to scare the American people every step of the way, and these grim predictions of a second wave are no different. The truth is, whatever the media says, our whole-of-America approach has been a success.”

The day before, Pence encouraged governors to repeat Trump’s lie that the spikes in new cases were only because of an increase in testing.

TRUMP: “If we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases, if any.”

New York Times: “Vice President Mike Pence encouraged governors on Monday to adopt the administration’s claim that increased testing helps account for the new coronavirus outbreak reports, even though evidence has shown that the explanation is misleading.”

On Monday, Larry Kudlow also told the American people that the administration does “not believe this is a second wave.”

KUDLOW: “I think it’s controllable…We do not believe this is a second wave.”

The only argument for there not being a second wave is that, as Dr. Fauci says, our first wave never ended. But of course, Trump won’t listen to Fauci.

FAUCI: “People keep talking about a second wave. We’re still in a first wave.”

CNN: “Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the most prominent members of the White House coronavirus task force, said on Monday that he has not spoken to or met with President Donald Trump in two weeks.”
