Trump Admin Promised Gas Prices Would Come Down By Summer — Where is the Relief?
June 1, 2026

Chris Wright said “there’s a very good chance” that gas will be back under $3 a gallon by summer — yet the average price of gas is almost $4.40 a gallon
Since Donald Trump started his unpopular war of choice with Iran, gas prices have surged with no end in sight. Trump and his administration officials have repeatedly claimed that gas prices will come down, and his Energy Secretary Chris Wright even said “there’s a very good chance” that gas will be back under $3 a gallon by summer — but it’s now June, and prices continue to soar.
Since the start of the war, gas prices have spiked by 50%, and today the average price of gas is $4.32 per gallon. The average U.S. household has already spent $450 more on gas and energy, and over 67% of Americans say gas prices are impacting their summer travel plans.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump and his White House officials repeatedly promised that gas prices would come down by summer, but it’s now June, and prices are at record highs. Families can’t afford to wait for lower prices any longer as they dip even further into their savings or cancel their summer travel plans. Trump and his administration have made it nearly impossible for everyday Americans to get by, and they’re offering nothing but excuses and empty promises. ”
Americans were struggling with high prices under Trump before he started his war with Iran, and now rising fuel prices have created a ripple effect, jacking up the prices of food, transportation, utility bills, and other everyday goods. Core inflation in April surged to 3.8%, the highest level in three years, and consumer sentiment sank to its lowest level ever recorded for the second month in a row — lower than during the Great Recession in 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic.
