Trump and MAGA Republicans Are Denying Billions in Relief for Every State for Their Own Selfish Political Gain

In response to Trump and his MAGA minions threatening disaster relief for their own political gain, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is ripping away billions in critically needed relief for millions of Americans across the country as part of his selfish political games to put his extreme MAGA agenda ahead of the American people. Trump and his billionaire buddies like Elon Musk are once again making sure that Republicans side with the ultra-wealthy and special interests – and against the needs of working families.”

Donald Trump and his MAGA minions’ petty political games could cost every state millions of dollars worth of essential disaster relief funding.

Fact Sheet, House Committee on Appropriations: “This supplemental disaster funding is critical for reconnecting regions, regrowing economies, and restoring a sense of normalcy where disasters have upended day-to-day lives, and delaying these resources will only lead to greater suffering and slower recovery for all those who are desperate to move on. Below is a subset of the investments communities stand to lose out on if Congress walks away from the bipartisan, bicameral disaster relief package.”

Trump has directed his MAGA minions to break a bipartisan agreement, threatening a government shutdown and critical disaster relief funding in the process.

John Bresnahan, Punchbowl News: “New: Trump is telling Republican senators that he is totally opposed to the CR & believes Mike Johnson has mishandling the situation”

Lawrence Jones III, Fox News: “I just spoke with the President-Elect @realDonaldTrump, and he is ‘totally against’ the proposed CR.”

NBC News: “President-elect Donald Trump excoriated a bipartisan government funding bill Wednesday afternoon, throwing the stopgap measure into chaos just as leaders of both parties were hoping to pass it.”

CBS News: “The new stopgap measure, with approval from the House, Senate and President Biden, would keep the government funded through March 14, giving lawmakers more time to reach agreement on new spending bills when the GOP controls both the House and the Senate.”

A government shutdown could disrupt the lives of millions of Americans and halt disaster relief funding.

TIME Magazine: “As Shutdown Looms, $100 Billion in Disaster Relief Hangs in Balance”

CNN: “Facing intense pressure of the federal government potentially shutting down within days and disaster aid coffers that need replenishment, lawmakers are racing to cobble together a temporary government funding plan after President-elect Donald Trump torpedoed their last package on Wednesday.

“The now-dead agreement would have kept the federal government operating through March 14, as well as provided nearly $100 billion in disaster aid and economic relief for farmers in rural communities. The deal would have also provided lawmakers with their first pay raise since 2009.”

Americans have been clear: they want a government that delivers for them, not a government shutdown that would affect working families and our nation’s economic stability.

PBS News: “Most Americans say it’s unacceptable for Congress to use federal shutdown as bargaining chip”

Axios: “More than half of American adults say a shutdown of the federal government would affect them personally — and 68% say the threat of one decreases their trust in the government, a new survey says.”
