Trump and Republicans Are Waging an All-Out Assault on Black Americans’ Voting Rights
February 27, 2026

Black voters’ access to the ballot box is under attack as Trump commands Republican-led states to rip away voting rights, including from communities of color. Trump knows his trail of broken campaign promises and his deeply unpopular agenda is catching up to him — and now he’s using desperate power grabs wherever he can to make it harder for voters of color to make their voices heard this November.
DNC Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation Reyna Walters-Morgan released the following statement:
“Trump and Republicans have launched an all-out assault on voting rights because they know their toxic agenda is going to cost them the midterms. Democrats are using every tool at our disposal to fight back against Republicans’ efforts to suppress and intimidate voters, and the good news is we’re winning. While Republican-led states have attempted to purge voter rolls, shutter polling locations, and pass laws that will keep communities of color from voting, Democrats are winning in the courts to stop them. This is a five-alarm fire for the future of our democracy and Trump will continue to attempt to whittle away every American’s rights if his power grabs go unchecked. These relentless attacks on voting rights will have devastating effects on Black communities for generations if they’re not stopped, but Democrats are prepared to fight back in 2026, 2028, and for elections to come.”
Republicans have continued to wage an all-out assault on Black Americans’ access to the ballot box.
- In Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Republicans have drawn maps that were in violation of the Voting Rights Act.
- Texas has been sued for drawing a gerrymandered map that diluted the voting power of Black and Hispanic voters.
The DNC continues to hold the Trump administration and Republicans accountable for their shameless attempts to rip away voting rights from Black voters and voters across the country.
- The DNC stopped North Carolina’s last-minute attempt to purge nearly a quarter million voters from the state’s voter rolls, including thousands of Black voters.
- The DNC has been standing with states as they fight Trump’s DOJ’s efforts to seize voter rolls and take over elections.
- The DNC is fighting to protect voters who rely on mail-in voting: we filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court that defends their rights.
- We have also put 10 states on notice who are being pressured to hand over sensitive, unredacted voter files to the DOJ, urging states to reject the DOJ’s agreement and protect voters’ information.
- We have demanded accountability through FOIA requests to Trump administration agencies for information on potential deployments to the polls on Election Day and ballot seizures to ensure the Trump administration feels the pressure and attention on any attempt to interfere in our elections.
