Trump Dines With Billionaires and CEOs While His Economy Craters
February 2, 2026

This weekend, Donald Trump toasted to his ever-growing fortune with his billionaire friends and donors, as he attended the Alfalfa Club Dinner, one of Washington’s most exclusive gatherings of the rich and powerful, and hosted another MAGA, Inc. fundraiser. Meanwhile, working families are facing skyrocketing prices on groceries, rent, and utilities, and Trump’s administration continues to fail on Trump’s campaign promises to bring down prices.
During his hour-plus-long speech, Trump “joked” about suing his nominee for chair of the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, if Warsh did not do his bidding, and repeatedly bragged about his pursuit of Greenland and the potential bombing of Iran.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump promised to ‘Drain the Swamp,’ but here he is dining with his billionaire buddies and wealthy donors. Grocery costs are at an all-time high, rent prices are soaring, the labor market is shedding jobs at a breakneck pace, and everyday Americans are struggling to make ends meet. Meanwhile, Trump is attending ritzy fundraisers, fixating on his ‘complete rebuilding’ of the Kennedy Center, and building his $400 million gilded ballroom. Trump has been clear that his only priorities are enriching himself and his rich and powerful friends — and voters are fed up.”
The Alfalfa Club has been referred to as the “most insidery bastion of insideWashington,” and an “exclusive club of establishment elites” — former Vice President Mike Pence said it reminded him of Trump’s cabinet meetings.
While Trump attends exclusive dinners and lavish fundraisers, voters continue to sour on his failing economy — and for good reason. In the past year, families have paid an additional $1,625 due to inflation — including $310 on grocery costs alone — as they shoulder the costs of Trump’s tariffs. New data show consumer confidence has dropped to its lowest point since 2014. Meanwhile, Trump is 29 points underwater on his handling of the cost of living.
