Trump Loved the CBO… Until They Told the Truth About His Disastrous Budget
June 5, 2025

In response to Donald Trump attacking the Congressional Budget Office after their latest report outlining the true cost of his billionaire-first budget, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Donald Trump has praised the CBO as ‘non-partisan’ and ‘objective,’ but now that the budget experts are revealing that Trump’s billionaire tax cut plan will blow a $3T hole in the deficit, he’s desperate to discredit those same experts. The numbers speak for themselves: Trump’s plan will kick 16 million Americans off their health insurance, put food assistance on the chopping block for 42 million Americans, and rig the economy for the ultra-wealthy.”
NEW: Donald Trump attacked the Congressional Budget Office after they warned his “billionaire-first” agenda will explode the deficit by trillions and rip health care away from 16 million Americans.
David Gura: “President Trump just said the Congressional Budget Office ‘is run by Democrats.’
“CBO Director Phillip Swagel is a Republican, who worked in the George W. Bush White House.”
Congressional Budget Office: “CBO estimates that debt-service costs under H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, would total $551 billion over the 2025–2034 period—increasing the bill’s cumulative effect on the deficit to $3.0 trillion.”
Burgess Everett, Semafor: “CBO finds that the [GOP] reconciliation bill (10.9 million) combined with the expiration of premium tax credits and new marketplace rule (5.1 million) would result in 16 million people fewer being insured”
Trump’s administration previously praised the CBO as “non-partisan” and “objective.”
Technical Supplement to the 2026 Budget: “The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) was established as a non-partisan office of Congress by Title II of the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 (2 U.S.C. 601 et seq.). CBO provides objective economic and budgetary analysis and information to assist the Congress in fulfilling its responsibilities.”
REMINDER: At Trump’s command, House Republicans passed their disastrous budget to make Trump’s tax scam permanent and fund another round of tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy on the backs of working families.
USA Today: “Low-income families would lose, wealthier ones would gain under GOP tax proposals”
“Low-income families stand to lose hundreds if not thousands of dollars in income while wealthy ones will gain even more, according to a new analysis of Congressional Republican tax and budget proposals. …
“The report estimated that families with a modified adjusted gross income of less than $10,000 would lose over $2,700 (or nearly a 15% reduction in income). Families who make between $10,000 and $20,000 would lose over $800, or about 4.4% reduction in income, while families who make between $20,000 and $30,000 would lose $400, or about 1.5% reduction in income.
“In comparison, families with higher incomes would benefit from the extension of the 2017 tax cuts.”
NBC News: “Senate Republicans released a new budget blueprint Wednesday that would pave the way for … making President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent.”
