Trump Poses A Historic Threat To Our Democracy, But He Can’t Change The Outcome Of The Election
November 20, 2020
Trump has become increasingly desperate in his ploy to overturn the outcome of the election after failing repeatedly in court because there is no evidence to support his baseless claims. Now, Trump is posing a historic threat to our democracy by abusing his power and personally trying to influence state election officials. Despite his best efforts to undermine the integrity of our elections, there is nothing Trump can do to change the reality that President-elect Biden won, and it wasn’t even close.
In a last ditch effort to overturn the outcome of the election, Trump has taken unprecedented steps to personally try to influence election officials.
Associated Press: “President Donald Trump and his allies are taking increasingly frantic steps to subvert the results of the 2020 election, including summoning state legislators to the White House as part of a longshot bid to overturn Joe Biden’s victory. Among other last-ditch tactics: personally calling local election officials who are trying to rescind their certification votes in Michigan, suggesting in a legal challenge that Pennsylvania set aside the popular vote there and pressuring county officials in Arizona to delay certifying vote tallies.”
New York Times: “President Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election are unprecedented in American history and an even more audacious use of brute political force to gain the White House than when Congress gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency during Reconstruction.”
Trump’s threats pose a historic level of danger to our democracy but will not change the outcome of the election, which wasn’t even close.
Washington Post: “On Thursday, legal experts said Trump’s pressure campaign was unlikely to actually change the electoral college’s vote. But, they said, the fact that Trump was trying it posed a historic level of danger for American democracy — by raising the prospect that a presidential election could be stolen from the inside.”
Associated Press: “Election law experts see it as the last, dying gasps of the Trump campaign and say Biden is certain to walk into the Oval Office come January.”
New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s chances of succeeding are somewhere between remote and impossible, and a sign of his desperation after President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. won by nearly six million popular votes and counting, as well as a clear Electoral College margin.”
Republican senators have spoken out against Trump’s efforts to undermine our democracy by trying to prevent Michigan from certifying its results.
Senator Romney: “Having failed to make even a plausible case of widespread fraud or conspiracy before any court of law, the President has now resorted to overt pressure on state and local officials to subvert the will of the people and overturn the election. It is difficult to imagine a worse, more undemocratic action by a sitting American President.”
Senator Sasse: “Based on what I’ve read in their filings, when Trump campaign lawyers have stood before courts under oath, they have repeatedly refused to actually allege grand fraud — because there are legal consequences for lying to judges. President Trump lost Michigan by more than 100,000 votes, and the campaign and its allies have lost in or withdrawn from all five lawsuits in Michigan for being unable to produce any evidence.”
Even Tucker Carlson has rebuked the Trump campaign’s inability to produce any evidence to support its outlandish conspiracy theories.
Tucker Carlson: “We invited Sydney Powell on the show. We would have given her the whole hour. We would have given her the entire week, actually, and listened quietly the whole time at rapt attention. But she never sent us any evidence, despite a lot of polite requests. When we kept pressing, she got angry and told us to stop contacting her. When we checked with others around the Trump campaign, people in positions of authority, they also told us Powell had never given them any evidence to prove anything she claimed today at the press conference. Powell did say that electronic voting is dangerous, and she’s right, but she never demonstrated that a single actual vote was moved illegitimately by software from one candidate to another. Not one.”
Meanwhile, the Trump campaign and its allies continue to lose in court and President-elect Biden’s win has only been reaffirmed.
CNN: “Georgia confirms Biden victory after statewide audit”
Politico: “Another bid by an ally of President Donald Trump to overturn the results of this month’s election was roundly rejected in court on Thursday, as a federal judge appointed by Trump turned down a bid to block the certification of President-elect Joe Biden as the victor in Georgia.”
ABC News: “Two more Pennsylvania legal challenges by President Donald Trump’s campaign appear to have failed, insuring that more than 2,700 ballots that had been contested over technicalities would, in fact, be counted.”
