The RNC announced that it plans to simply copy and paste its platform from 2016 for 2020. That’s a problem for Trump, who has failed by his own party’s standards.

GOP PLATFORM: “Our economy has become unnecessarily weak with stagnant wages. People living paycheck to paycheck are struggling, sacrificing, and suffering.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Even before the pandemic, middle-class income growth had slowed under Trump, and about half of Americans were living paycheck to paycheck.

Newsweek: “Middle-class incomes grew at a rate of 2.7 percent from 2016 through 2018, compared to a 5.8 percent growth rate from 2014 through 2016 when accounting for inflation.”

Washington Examiner: “A near majority of Americans, 49%, are living paycheck to paycheck, according to a new survey by the First National Bank of Omaha.”

GOP PLATFORM: “President Obama and his party will set a record of being the first modern president ever to leave office without a single calendar year of three percent economic growth.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Annual GDP growth hasn’t hit 3% once under Trump.

Axios: “Annual growth under Trump hasn’t hit the administration’s promise of 3%.”

GOP PLATFORM: “Our labor force participation rate has plunged to at or below 63 percent for far too long, lows last seen two generations ago before President Reagan was elected in 1980.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: The labor force participation rate plateaued around or below 63 percent for the duration of Trump’s presidency and plunged below 61 percent in April and May.

St. Louis Fed’s Federal Reserve Economic Data:

GOP PLATFORM: “We need better negotiated trade agreements that put America first.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Trump’s phase one trade deal with China failed to boost purchases of U.S. exports like he promised and didn’t even get exports back to where they were before his damaging trade war.

Politico’s Doug Palmer: “U.S. goods exports to China through the first four months of 2020 only totaled $30.6 billion. That’s about 25 percent less than the $39.3 billion exported during the same period in 2017, the benchmark year for the U.S.-China trade deal.”

GOP PLATFORM: “The huge increase in the national debt demanded by and incurred during the current Administration has placed a significant burden on future generations.”

TRUMP’s REALITY: Trump is responsible for a national debt that rapidly increased even before the coronavirus.

Wall Street Journal: “Government deficits have now increased for four years in a row, the longest stretch of U.S. deficit growth since the early 1980s, a period marked by two recessions and a jobless rate near 11%.”

Fox News: “Trump poised to add more debt than Obama in first term”

GOP PLATFORM: “The current Administration has exceeded its constitutional authority, brazenly and flagrantly violated the separation of powers, sought to divide America into groups and turn citizen against citizen.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Trump was impeached for his abuse of powers — and he hasn’t let up since Senate Republicans let him off the hook.

Washington Post: “Trump says his ‘authority is total.’ Constitutional experts have ‘no idea’ where he got that.”

GOP PLATFORM: “The next president must restore the public’s trust in law enforcement and civil order by first adhering to the rule of law himself.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Trump has flagrantly flouted the rule of law — from pardoning political allies to obstructing Congress.

CNN: “Trump’s unbroken pattern of disdain for the rule of law”

GOP PLATFORM: “We recognize the dedication of most employees of the federal government and thank them for their service, with special praise for the whistleblowers who risk their careers to expose waste, fraud, and misuse of power.”

TRUMP’s REALITY: Trump has attacked and attempted to silence whistleblowers while undermining the inspectors general who act on their complaints.

CNN: “Trump fires intelligence community watchdog who told Congress about whistleblower complaint that led to impeachment”

GOP PLATFORM: “Cronyism is inherent in the progressive vision of the administrative state.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Trump has pushed for loans and contracts for his donors and friends.

Guardian: “Trump’s priorities and campaign machine often tilt towards giving donors and political allies favors, access and publicity.”

GOP PLATFORM: “Government should not play favorites among energy producers.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Trump has pushed to save dirty energy producers going out of business due to their higher costs.

NPR: “In his latest effort to boost the coal business — and in the process help a major supporter — President Trump has called on the Tennessee Valley Authority to, essentially, ignore the advice of its staff and keep a large coal-fired power plant operating.”

GOP PLATFORM: “We denounce bigotry, racism, anti-Semitism, ethnic prejudice, and religious intolerance.”

TRUMP’S REALITY : Trump has failed to stand up to bigotry, racism, and intolerance in our country — and has too often perpetuated it.

Vox: “President Donald Trump is still defending his infamous remarks in the wake of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, when he said, ‘You also had some very fine people on both sides.’”

GOP PLATFORM: “We will meet the return of Russian belligerence with the same resolve that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. We will not accept any territorial change in Eastern Europe imposed by force, in Ukraine, Georgia, or elsewhere.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: Trump has repeated Putin’s propaganda on Crimea and election interference — while giving Russia exactly what it wants in Syria.

Washington Post: “Donald Trump’s talking points on Crimea are the same as Vladimir Putin’s”

GOP PLATFORM: “Our standing in world affairs has declined significantly — our enemies no longer fear us and our friends no long trust us.”

TRUMP’S REALITY: The world’s view of the U.S. has significantly soured under Trump’s failed leadership. He has fought with our allies and embraced dictators.
