Trump Steals Money From The Military For His Own Political Gain
September 4, 2019
Trump is stealing money already allocated to our military and their families so he can fund his unnecessary and ineffective border wall that he promised would be paid for by Mexico. This isn’t the first time Trump has hurt the military, our veterans, and military families for his own political gain. See for yourself:
TRUMP REPEATEDLY PUT HIS ANTI-IMMIGRANT AGENDA AHEAD OF OUR SOLDIERS AND VETERANS: Trump wants to scale back a program that protects undocumented family members of active-duty troops from being deported, and issued a rule that could punish immigrant veterans and their families for using public benefits.
NPR: “The Trump administration wants to scale back a program that protects undocumented family members of active-duty troops from being deported, according to attorneys familiar with those plans. The attorneys are racing to submit applications for what is known as parole in place after hearing from the wives and loved ones of deployed soldiers who have been told that option is ‘being terminated.’”
ProPublica: “Under the so-called public charge regulation, which became final last week, immigrants seeking permanent legal status in the U.S. will be subject to a complex new test to determine if they will rely on public benefits. Among the factors that immigration officers will consider are whether the applicant has frequently used public benefits in the past, their household income, education level and credit scores. Active-duty military members can accept public benefits without jeopardizing their future immigration status; veterans and their families, however, cannot.”
GOLD STAR FAMILIES FELL VICTIM TO TRUMP’S RUSH TO GIVE TAX CUTS TO THE WEALTHY AND BIG CORPORATIONS: The tax cut for the wealthy that Trump and Republicans rammed through Congress tripled taxes for many Gold Star widows.
CNN: “President Donald Trump has long touted the advantages of his 2017 tax reform bill, but Republicans are now under fire for one of the bill’s overlooked consequences: A huge hit for families of fallen service members. That’s due to a change in how the IRS handles survivor benefits paid out to children, which are now treated like stocks or other inheritances—driving up taxes by thousands of dollars.”
TRUMP HAS SIDED WITH FOR-PROFIT COLLEGES OVER OUR NATION’S VETERANS: Veterans were among the most vulnerable to Trump’s rollback of Obama-era guidelines cracking down on for-profit colleges and their corrupt practices targeting veterans.
NBC News: “While the Obama Administration didn’t solve all the problems associated with the for-profit college industry, it successfully created new rules intended to help rein in the worst-performing schools and to protect taxpayer dollars. Veterans and low-income Americans can qualify for large sums of federal aid, making them top recruitment priorities for for-profits. Now, the Trump Administration is trying to overturn those rules — and veterans and low-income Americans are the most at risk. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has begun a months long process to unwind the Obama-era rules, easing oversight of for-profits’ use of tax dollars and protections for defrauded students.”
TRUMP SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT AND KEPT SERVICE MEMBERS FROM BEING PAID: The Trump Shutdown disproportionately affected veterans, and service members in the Coast Guard missed their paychecks.
ABC News: “An estimated one-third of the federal workforce is made up of veterans, according to the Office of Personnel Management, meaning that more than 250,000 veterans are not currently receiving paychecks.”
Fox News: “Tens of thousands of members of the U.S. Coast Guard did not receive a paycheck on Tuesday, marking the first time in U.S. history service members in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces were not paid due to a lapse in government funding. The U.S. Coast Guard is the only branch of the U.S. Armed Forces affected by the partial government shutdown, as it falls under the purview of the Department of Homeland Security, rather than the Department of Defense like other branches.”
