Trump Takes Money From Vital Programs To Fund His Anti-Immigrant Agenda

The Trump administration is planning to divert millions away from FEMA’s disaster relief fund at the start of hurricane season to continue and expand its efforts to separate and detain migrant families. This is only the latest example of Trump trying to take money away from our military and other vital programs to fund his anti-immigrant agenda.

TRUMP WANTS TO TAKE MONEY FROM DISASTER RELIEF: Trump’s DHS wants to transfer more than $150 MILLION from FEMA’s disaster relief fund towards immigration enforcement.

CNN: “The Trump administration plans to shift at least $155 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster relief fund to support its policy of returning some migrants to Mexico.”

TRUMP TOOK MONEY FROM OUR MILITARY: Trump declared a national emergency so he could redirect billions in funding from military construction projects and other DOD programs toward building his border wall.

New York Times: “The emergency declaration, according to White House officials, enables the president to divert $3.6 billion from military construction projects to the wall. Mr. Trump will also use more traditional presidential discretion to tap $2.5 billion from counternarcotics programs and $600 million from a Treasury Department asset forfeiture fund.”

CNN: “The Pentagon has sent Congress a list of projects that could be impacted by President Donald Trump’s decision to declare a national emergency and repurpose military construction funds to pay for his sought-after border wall with Mexico. The list, which includes a pool of projects valued at $12.9 billion that are ‘unobligated,’ meaning that construction contracts have yet to be awarded.”

TRUMP TRIED TO TAKE MONEY FROM THE ARMY CORPS: Trump was briefed on a plan that would take money from the Army Corps of Engineers to fund his border wall.

NBC News: “President Donald Trump has been briefed on a plan that would use the Army Corps of Engineers and a portion of $13.9 billion of Army Corps funding to build 315 miles of barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the briefing.”

TRUMP TRIED TO TAKE MONEY FROM FLOOD PROTECTION: Trump considered a plan to fund his border wall by taking money set aside for flood prevention and reconstruction projects.

NBC News: “Under the proposal, the officials said, Trump could dip into the $2.4 billion allocated to projects in California, including flood prevention and protection projects along the Yuba River Basin and the Folsom Dam, as well as the $2.5 billion set aside for reconstruction projects in Puerto Rico, which is still recovering from Hurricane Maria.”
