Trump to Spend 76th Day at One of His Properties, Wasting Taxpayer Dollars

This weekend Trump will spend time at his Bedminster golf course and Trump Tower. He has already spent 75 days at Trump-owned properties and 58 days at his golf courses over his presidency, wasting millions of taxpayer dollars. On top of that, Trump’s trip will be burdensome for local residents – as Trump himself admitted.

Trump previously said that he would not stay in Manhattan because it would be so disruptive.

Trump: “Well, this isn’t really for me a trip. You know, I stay out of Manhattan because it’s so disruptive to go to Manhattan.” [Trump Remarks After National Security Briefing, Bedminster NJ, 8/11/17]

Trump: “But I stay out because it’s so disruptive. You know, all of my life—I mean my adult life because I grew up in Queens, not in Manhattan. But, during the time that I lived in Manhattan, whenever a president came in, it was very disruptive. And I think I’m probably more disruptive than any of them.” [Trump Remarks After National Security Briefing, Bedminster NJ, 8/11/17]

Trump’s frequent trips to multiple Trump-owned properties and Trump’s jet-setting family has left the Secret Service out of money, and led them to request even more taxpayer dollars to pay their overworked agents.

USA Today: “The Secret Service can no longer afford to pay hundreds of agents it needs to carry out an expanded protective mission – in large part due to the sheer size of President Trump's family and efforts necessary to secure their multiple residences up and down the East Coast. […] The compensation crunch is so serious that the director has begun discussions with key lawmakers to raise the combined salary and overtime cap for agents, from $160,000 per year to $187,000 for at least the duration of Trump's first term.”

Trump’s trips to Bedminster are burdensome for residents and businesses of the small New Jersey town.

Politico: New Jersey gives Trump a chilly reception”

Reuters: “As Bedminster prepared this week for the president's latest trip to the 600-acre (240-hectare) private club, a 17-day stay that is his first extended vacation in office, some of the town's 8,000 residents expressed frustration at the security protocols, road closures and daily disruption that will begin with his arrival on Friday.”

Associated Press: “Small airports and aviation-related businesses near Trump's properties in Florida and New Jersey have lost out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in business already this year. And they have no recourse other than to appeal to the Secret Service, which oversees presidential security.”

Trump’s trips to his properties have already cost taxpayers millions of dollars and his recent Bedminster vacation cost an estimated $3.2 million alone, according to one study.

Center for American Progress: “Trump's August Bedminster trip costs an estimated $3,246,698.06, which includes the same roundtrip flight cost as the three day trip, as well as Bedminster township costs, DOD and DHS per diems costs, and Secret Service staffing costs all adjusted for an 18 day trip if that's possible.”

USA Today: “Trump's frequent visits to his ‘winter White House’ and ‘summer White House’ are especially challenging for the agency, which must maintain a regular security infrastructure at each – while still allowing access to paying members and guests.  Always costly in manpower and equipment, the president's jaunts to Mar-a-Lago are estimated to cost at least $3 million each, based on a General Accounting Office estimate for similar travel by former President Obama.”

USA Today: “The Feb. 5 flight to Houston was part of more than $3.5 million in White House travel that Judicial Watch has reviewed so far under the Freedom of Information Act since the Trump administration took office Jan. 20.”

Palm Beach Post: “While the expenses mentioned in the two letters add up to $3.7 million, sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera said Tuesday that PBSO’s Trump-related overtime costs now stand at $4.5 million.”

USA TodayThe Secret Service has spent some $60,000 on golf cart rentals alone this year to protect Trump at both Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster.”
