Trump’s Chaotic Trade Policies Lead to More Mass Layoffs — This Time in the Cattle Industry
December 1, 2025

Last week, Tyson Foods announced sweeping layoffs at its beef processing plant in Amarillo, TX, directly following the closure of its beef plant in Lexington, NE — another sign that Trump’s chaotic trade policies are taking a toll on American workers and farmers. These combined layoffs will affect nearly 5,000 employees right before the holidays and devastate the local economies and families that counted on these plants.
Trump promised to usher in a “golden age” for workers, but all they’ve gotten is economic pain. Thanks to his disastrous economic agenda, more and more Americans are losing their jobs while seeing everyday costs skyrocket.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Trump promised to keep plants like the ones in Amarillo and Lexington open. They closed. Trump promised to bring down prices. They’re spiking. Trump promised a ‘manufacturing renaissance’ and a ‘golden age.’ Instead, hardworking Americans are losing their jobs, and we’re heading towards a recession. Every worker affected by these devastating layoffs under Trump deserves better.”
In recent weeks, mass layoffs have surged: Verizon began laying off 13,000 workers — the largest cut in the company’s history; GM announced more than 1,700 job cuts; Amazon cut 14,000 workers with more to come; and Target laid off 1,800 workers. The September jobs report revealed that the unemployment rate edged up to a staggering 4.4%, the highest since October 2021. To top it all off, in October alone, more than 150,000 jobs were cut nationwide, bringing the total number of layoffs in 2025 to over 1.1 million. Additionally, today’s November ISM Manufacturing PMI Report shows that manufacturing layoffs accelerated last month, as rising input costs shrink factory margins.
