Trump’s Immigration Lies: Blames Democrats For His Own Policy
May 30, 2018
Trump has repeatedly attempted to blame Democrats for separating families at the border. That’s a lie and here’s the truth:
FactCheck.org: “President Donald Trump wrongly blamed Democrats for a Trump administration policy that will separate parents and their young children caught entering the U.S. illegally.”
PolitiFact: “Donald Trump blames Democrats for own immigration policy separating families”
Politico’s Morning Shift: “Trump’s tweet was utter nonsense, and press reports didn’t hesitate to say so.”
CNN: “Miller's assertion that Democrats are ‘exclusively and solely’ blocking changes to the law and court decisions — which Congress cannot overrule — is not backed up by evidence.”
Associated Press: “No law mandates that parents must be separated from their children at the border, and it's not a policy Democrats have pushed or can change alone as the minority in Congress. The policy comes from Trump's own administration, which has decided to enforce criminal charges against people crossing the border illegally with few or no previous offenses.”
NPR: “The president implied that children were being separated from their parents at the border because of a law enacted by Democrats. Actually, the policy in question was enacted by his own administration.”
Washington Post: “In one of several misleading tweets during the holiday weekend, Trump pushed Democrats to change a ‘horrible law’ that the president said mandated separating children from parents who enter the country illegally. But there is no law specifically requiring the government to take such action, and it’s also the policies of his own administration that have caused the family separation that advocacy groups and Democrats say is a crisis.”
