Trump’s MAGA Veepstakes: VP Contender Tim Scott Supports the Most Extreme National Abortion Ban Possible

Ahead of Tim Scott’s appearance at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, D.C., DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“Just like Donald Trump, VP contender Tim Scott is an anti-choice extremist who wants to ban abortion nationwide. Scott thinks Trump is ‘right’ on endorsing cruel abortion bans across the country, has repeatedly co-sponsored national abortion bans, and voted against protecting access to IVF and contraception. Trump and Scott’s dangerous and deeply unpopular agenda to rip away women’s freedoms will not stand with voters, who will once reject their cruel anti-choice agenda this November.”

Tim Scott repeatedly co-sponsored national abortion bans — including legislation that could rip away IVF access and threaten doctors with jail time — and vowed to support the most extreme national abortion ban possible.

PolitiFact: “45 Republicans in the U.S. Senate sponsored or co-sponsored the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, that would impose a prison sentence of up to five years [on doctors who violate the act].”

Scott: “If I were president of the United States, I would literally sign the most conservative pro-life legislation that they can get through Congress.”

Scott: “I am 100% pro-life. When I am president of the United States, I will sign the most pro-life legislation the House and Senate can put on my desk. We should begin with a 15-week national limit.”

Scott on whether he would sign Lindsey Graham’s 15-week ban: “Every day, I would sign that bill into law. I would sign the most conservative pro-life legislation you can bring to my desk.”

Tim Scott: “We have to have a federal limit on how far we can go, and that is something that we have to discuss.”

Scott said Donald Trump is “right” on abortion when he overturned Roe and paved the way for extreme abortion bans across the country…

Scott: “President Trump has got the issue right. It is a state issue, it belongs to the states.”

…and praised South Carolina’s cruel law that bans abortion before many women know they’re pregnant and threatens doctors and nurses with jail time.

Scott: “The state is trying to protect the culture of life and that’s good news. I mean, the heartbeat bill is a step in the direction of that.”

Associated Press: “South Carolina’s new all-male highest court reverses course on abortion, upholding strict 6-week ban”

REMINDER: Trump said he’d sign a national abortion ban if elected to a second term and is ‘proudly’ the reason millions of women live under cruel abortion bans today.

Trump: “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade.”

Trump: “We broke Roe v. Wade and we did something that nobody thought was possible. We gave it back to the states, and the states are working very brilliantly … But they’re working, and it’s working the way it’s supposed to.”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Trump and MAGA Republicans’ anti-choice agenda is wildly unpopular with the American people.

USA Today: “Americans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide. By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents.”

Axios: “Most Americans support abortion access one year after Roe v. Wade: poll”

CNN: “A 64% majority of US adults say they disapprove of last year’s Supreme Court ruling that women do not have a constitutional right to an abortion, with half strongly disapproving – an assessment that’s almost entirely unchanged from CNN’s poll last July in the immediate wake of the decision.”

ABC News: “Americans continue to support IVF and abortion access”

“The vast majority of registered voters, 80 percent, think IVF should be legal.”

Navigator Research: “Large majorities say reproductive care like birth control pills and IVF should be made easier to access, including majorities of Republicans. … Americans across party lines also say access to fertility planning like IVF should be easier to access, including 72 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of independents, and 53 percent of Republicans.”
