Trump’s MAGA Veepstakes: VP Contenders Are Pushing to Ban Abortion Nationwide

As several of Donald Trump’s VP contenders speak at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, D.C. today and tomorrow, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“Donald Trump wants an anti-choice extremist to be his running mate, and his VP contenders are desperately trying to out-MAGA each other by touting their anti-freedom records. Ahead of the anniversary of Trump ‘proudly’ overturning Roe v. Wade, his potential running mates are reminding the American people of how they want to ban abortion nationwide — and have the records to prove it. Make no mistake: reproductive freedom is on the ballot this November, and voters will reject Trump and whichever anti-choice MAGA minion joins his ticket.”

Elise Stefanik wants to ban abortion nationwide and has endorsed the cruel bans that MAGA Republicans have passed around the country since Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Washington Examiner: “House GOP conference chairwoman calls for 15-week federal abortion ban post-Dobbs”

“When pressed on a definitive statement regarding a federal abortion ban, Stefanik said that ‘we do have a role’ at the federal level … ‘We should embrace this debate,’ Stefanik said, noting the vital role of the local, state, and federal governments in fulfilling the ‘promise of new and better policies.’”

2022: Stefanik co-sponsored a national abortion ban in the House.

Stefanik: “Since Roe was overturned and the Supreme Court restored the correct interpretation of our Constitution, 25 states have life saving laws on the books.”

2024: Stefanik received an A+ rating from extreme anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Ben Carson supports a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest and has compared abortion to slavery.

New York Times: “Ben Carson Calls For Ban On Abortion In All Circumstances”

Bloomberg: “Ben Carson, clarifying his stance on abortion, told Bloomberg Politics he wouldn’t support law that provides exceptions in cases of rape, incest.”

NBC News: “Ben Carson said he would ‘love’ to see Roe vs. Wade overturned and make abortion illegal nationwide with almost no exemptions.”

BuzzFeed: “Ben Carson Compares Abortion To Slavery.”

Kristi Noem has repeatedly co-sponsored national abortion bans, bragged about restricting medication abortion access, does not support exceptions for rape or incest, and threatened abortion providers with prosecution.

2017, 2015, 2013, and 2011: Noem co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act, a national abortion ban that could threaten IVF access.

Argus Leader: “Pro-life advocates and Gov. Kristi Noem are lauding the South Dakota Legislature for further bolstering the state’s already strict anti-abortion laws this legislative session, steps necessary for states to take if abortion will ever be completely illegal in the United States, they say. … Noem told the Argus Leader this week that she is an absolutist on the topic, not even compromising in the event of rape or incest.”

Associated Press: “The Republican governor and South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley released a letter to South Dakota pharmacists saying they are ‘subject to felony prosecution’ if they procure or dispense abortion-inducing drugs.”

Noem: “Doctors who knowingly violate the law, they should be prosecuted.”

Dana Bash, CNN: “Do you think there should be exceptions for rape and incest, for example?”

Noem: “… I just don’t believe a tragedy should perpetuate another tragedy.”

Glenn Youngkin supports a national abortion ban, and he tried and spectacularly failed to enact an abortion ban in Virginia – and is still doubling down on his anti-choice extremism.

Kaitlan Collins, CNN: “What about a federal ban? Are you for that?”

Youngkin: “I think that where common sense brings us together is around a 15-week bill that protects life.”

Washington Post: “Youngkin bets 15-week abortion limit is winner in Virginia and beyond”

“Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has tied Virginia Republicans’ hopes for winning legislative elections next month in part to the controversial strategy of embracing new limits on abortion access after 15 weeks, transforming his divided state into a national litmus test that is likely to shape the 2024 elections.”

19th News: “Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin campaigned aggressively for his party to take control of Virginia’s legislature — and promised that, given Republican majorities, he would enact a law banning abortion in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest and to protect the life of the pregnant patient.”

Washington Post: “‘Any bill that comes to my desk I will sign happily and gleefully in order to protect life,’ [Youngkin] said.”

VPM: “Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed four bills Friday night that would have created shield laws for reproductive-health providers.”

Tulsi Gabbard celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Gabbard: “By decentralizing this, making progress in limiting the jurisdiction of the federal government, we are moving in the right direction.”

Trump is looking for an anti-abortion extremist to be his running mate as he pushes a cruel anti-choice agenda to rip away women’s freedoms.

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade.”

Trump: “We broke Roe v. Wade and we did something that nobody thought was possible. We gave it back to the states, and the states are working very brilliantly … But they’re working, and it’s working the way it’s supposed to.”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”
