While President Biden Is Lowering Health Care Costs, Trump Wants To Gut Access to Care for Millions of Americans

As President Biden fights to expand health care access while Trump pushes to terminate the ACA and gut coverage for millions of Americans, DNC spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“Let’s be clear: Donald Trump wants to ‘totally kill’ the Affordable Care Act and its protections for 100 million Americans with preexisting conditions, all while gutting access to health care for working families and rolling back President Biden’s cuts to prescription drug costs for seniors. Trump’s anti-health care agenda is toxic to voters and a loser at the ballot box. Americans want nothing to do with Trump’s out-of-touch attacks on our health care, and will choose President Biden’s historic leadership in expanding health care access and driving down costs over Trump’s MAGA extremism in November.”

President Biden has strengthened the Affordable Care Act while in office – including by lowering premiums and expanding access to health care for hardworking American families.

CNN: “The president has taken several steps to enhance Obamacare’s appeal, including beefing up federal premium subsidies through 2025 and allowing more families to qualify for assistance.”

CNN: “Soon after taking office in 2021, Biden moved to bolster Obamacare after years of the Trump administration’s efforts to chip away at the program. In one the most significant moves, the president and congressional Democrats beefed up federal subsidies for Obamacare policies as part of the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act and renewed the more generous assistance as part of last year’s Inflation Reduction Act. The enhanced subsidies – which enable four out of five people to find a plan for less than $10 a month – continue through 2025.”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is hellbent on getting rid of the ACA and ripping away access to affordable care from millions of Americans.

Trump: “The cost of Obamacare is out of control, plus, it’s not good Healthcare. I’m seriously looking at alternatives. We had a couple of Republican Senators who campaigned for 6 years against it, and then raised their hands not to terminate it. It was a low point for the Republican Party, but we should never give up!”

Trump: “Obamacare is a disaster. And I said, ‘We’re gonna do something about it.’”

President Biden took on Big Pharma — and won. Thanks to the historic Inflation Reduction Act, millions of Americans are seeing lower prescription drug costs, including a $35 monthly cap on insulin for seniors.

CNN: “More Americans can now get insulin for $35”

“Congress, the White House and new players in the market have increased pressure on insulin manufacturers to lower their prices. Eli Lilly and Sanofi announced that they would institute $35 caps shortly after President Joe Biden called on drugmakers to do so in his State of the Union address last year. Medicare enrollees now pay no more than $35 a month for each of their insulin prescriptions, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, which Democratic lawmakers pushed through Congress in 2022.”

USA Today: “Insulin $35 cap price now in effect, lowering costs for many Americans with diabetes”

“In 2022, a sweeping climate and health bill called the Inflation Reduction Act capped insulin costs at $35 a month for Medicare enrollees. In February 2023, Biden urged Congress to extend that out-of-pocket cap to younger Americans with private health insurance.”

“Part of 2022’s Inflation Reduction Act allows Medicare to negotiate prices for prescription drugs that had been particularly expensive for the federal health program that covers millions of Americans aged 65 and older as well as the disabled.”

“Under the new law, Medicare for the first time will be able to directly haggle with drugmakers over prices for the costliest medications to drive down the high cost of prescription drugs for older people.

Trump and his extreme MAGA minions want to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act and its lifesaving provisions.

Daily Beast: “Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), a member of House GOP leadership, said ‘I assume’ Republicans would move to repeal [the Inflation Reduction Act], but indicated it was still early.”

Axios: “RSC budget revives conservative health priorities”

“The Republican Study Committee today laid out a budget proposal that suggests a health policy blueprint if the GOP controls the White House and at least one chamber of Congress next year.

“The health care section … calls for killing the Inflation Reduction Act and its drug price provisions. … It would remove many of the Affordable Care Act’s protections for pre-existing conditions.”

The Hill: “The [Inflation Reduction Act] has been in Republicans’ crosshairs ever since it passed. If they win the White House and both chambers of Congress in the upcoming election, they’re likely to aim for at least a partial repeal.”
