Trump’s Immigration Policies Are Ripping Apart Hardworking Families

Tonight, in his State of the Union address, Donald Trump will denigrate and insult immigrants, just as he has done since the day he announced his presidential campaign. He will claim he is fighting for all Americans, but actions speak louder than words. In reality, his policies hurt hardworking American families in every corner of the country, consigning millions of immigrants to live in fear, while holding Dreamers hostage in service of his anti-immigrant agenda.

The Washington Post: Unshackled by the Trump administration, deportation agents discount basic decency

“Recent months have brought news of one senseless detention and deportation after another. From all appearances, the agency seems to have embraced the idea that it is just to sunder established families and separate immigrant parents from their U.S.-born children — even in cases involving garden-variety technical violations of immigration rules.”

The Intercept: No Sanctuary

“The events in New York are taking place against a national backdrop of escalating actions against prominent immigrant rights figures. On December 20, ICE agents in Washington state began deportation proceedings against Maru Mora-Villalpando, founder of an organization that leads weekly rallies and vigils outside the gates of Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington. In Colorado, ICE detained the husband of Ingrid Encalada Latorre, an undocumented Peruvian mother who has been taking sanctuary in Denver-area churches since 2016.”

Esquire Magazine: The Un-American ICE

“Meanwhile, ICE has run wild. They are busting parents while their kids are at school. They’re publicizing ‘sweeps’ in cities like they’re chasing down Capone or someone. And there’s a very good possibility that, in the so-called ‘sanctuary cities,’ we will see confrontations between ICE agents and local law enforcement. And now we have this latest insanity, whereby technology will be handed to an agency sliding swiftly toward a very dangerous point.”

The Verge: ICE is about to start tracking license plates across the US

“The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has officially gained agency-wide access to a nationwide license plate recognition database, according to a contract finalized earlier this month. The system gives the agency access to billions of license plate records and new powers of real-time location tracking, raising significant concerns from civil libertarians.”

CBS News: Family heartbroken after ICE detains Polish doctor living in U.S. for 40 years

“Those who know Niec say he's a loving father and a well-known physician of internal medicine at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Now they're worried he could be deported back to Poland. ‘He cannot be deported back to Poland, a country he doesn't know, a country he has no family at,’ his sister Iwona Niec-Villaire told the station.”

NJ.com: AG criticizes ICE arrests of immigrants as kids were going to school

“In his own letter to the Department of Homeland Security last year, Rabner warned the practice could undermine New Jersey's justice system, following the arrests of two individuals making routine appearances in New Jersey Superior Court, ‘I write to urge that arrests of this type not take place in courthouses,’ Rabner wrote.”

KOAT News: ICE agents use justice system to detain immigrants

“An MDC spokesperson says ICE agents periodically come to the facility to check records. Some local immigrant rights groups say the fear of agents using the justice system discourages immigrants from showing up to court or probation hearings.”

The Mercury News: Fearing ICE raids, San Jose father tells children: ‘Be prepared to be alone’

“Because none of the Perez family has a criminal record, the family says, they are not supposed to be the target of any potential ICE raid. But there are reports that even those with clean records can be swept up as “collateral” arrests. Ernesto, 48, the family patriarch, works the night shift as a janitor and fears that could happen to him.”
