As we inch closer to Republicans’ messy primary, it’s increasingly clear what will be the key litmus test in their race to see who can out-MAGA each other: A national abortion ban.

The Republican Party is united around an extreme MAGA agenda of banning abortion.

Politico: “… the Supreme Court’s June ruling erasing federal abortion rights has created a new litmus test in Republican presidential politics.”

Politico: “Anti-abortion advocates are insisting on more in a post-Roe era — namely, a hard commitment to back a federal abortion ban — and they’re holding out until they get it.”

If anti-abortion extremists coming out and saying it wasn’t enough, let’s take a look at the extreme records of the MAGA Republicans across the country:

Donald Trump put the three conservative justices on the Supreme Court who overturned Roe v. Wade — and paved the way for Republicans across the country to pass abortion bans. But, to anti-choice extremists that was only the beginning and there is still more work to be done.

Politico: “No longer is it sufficient for a candidate to identify as ‘pro-life,’ promise to defund Planned Parenthood or even to provide — as Trump did — a list of potential Supreme Court nominees who would vote to curtail abortion rights.”

Despite already signing an extreme abortion ban that has no exceptions for rape or incest and threatens to prosecute providers, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is setting the groundwork to follow through on his 2018 pledge to pass a dangerous 6-week abortion ban in Florida. 

Florida Politics: “Gov. DeSantis ‘ready to sign’ abortion ‘heartbeat bill’”

Politico: “And there will be more steps by DeSantis to lure conservatives to his side in the coming weeks and months ahead. There are already rumblings that state lawmakers will hold special legislative sessions between now and March to tackle issues such as guns and abortion.”

Tallahassee Democrat: “In Florida, strategy sessions involving representatives of DeSantis, including his chief-of-staff, James Uthmeier, and anti-abortion advocates have already taken place, according to some participants who did not want to speak publicly about the internal discussions.

Politico: “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose state’s 15-week abortion ban would have been at the leading edge of the anti-abortion movement a year ago — enter the 2024 cycle under pressure to go farther.”

Not to be outdone, Mike Pence constantly brags about his role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and, in the wake of the Dobbs decision, was the first major Republican out the gate advocating for banning abortion in every state.

Politico: “Pence has repeatedly touted and taken credit for the anti-abortion policies of the Trump administration, openly courting the support of anti-abortion groups as he considers a 2024 run.”

Mike Pence: “‘I’ve often said I’m pro-life… I don’t apologize for it. I’d love to see the sanctity of life restored to the center of American law in all 50 states. But I recognize that may take as long to accomplish in every state in the country as it did to overturn Roe v. Wade…’”

Youngkin has said he’d “happily and gleefully” sign “any bill” to restrict a woman’s ability to make her own health care decisions. 

Politico: “Another GOP governor activists are watching as a potential 2024 candidate, Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin”

Politico: “[Youngkin] has repeatedly pledged to sign a 15-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother should one ever make it to his desk. In December, he also proposed banning the state’s Medicaid program from covering abortion in cases of ‘incapacitating’ fetal deformities. Yet conservatives in the state are eager to go further.”

Washington Post: “‘Any bill that comes to my desk I will sign happily and gleefully in order to protect life,’ [Youngkin] said.”

As governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley signed into law an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. 

Nikki Haley: “I want to see as many states that are pro-life as possible.”

Politico: “Other Republican stars are also working to prove their anti-abortion bona fides as they weigh presidential runs, well aware that they have to navigate a more complex landscape post-Roe.

Haley has said she is ‘very pro-life,’ and as governor of South Carolina in 2016, she signed into law a 20-week abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. But she has also said that abortion restrictions should be decided at the state level — a point of contention with some anti-abortion groups.

This doesn’t encompass every single Republican, but it’s clear every single Republican eyeing 2024 will have to make clear where they stand about a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. Make no mistake: The Republican Party’s extreme crusade to ban abortion nationwide, and make it a litmus test among Republicans, is wildly out-of-touch with the majority of Americans.
