Republicans and anti-abortion groups in Iowa are teeing up a new litmus test for 2024 GOP hopefuls — the push for a total abortion ban in the Hawkeye State. As Republicans flock to Iowa over the next year in hopes of rallying support for a 2024 campaign, they’ll have to answer not only for their own extreme records but also to whether they support the move to completely ban abortion in the state with no exceptions.

Iowa Republicans are pushing a total abortion ban in the state with a bill that could also pave the way to ban forms of birth control and Plan B.

Iowa Public Radio: “Iowa anti-abortion groups and some Republican lawmakers are starting the push for a ‘life at conception’ bill that would ban all abortion in Iowa.”

TIME: “Fetal personhood laws could also impact contraception access, given that some members of the anti-abortion movement argue that IUDs and the emergency contraception Plan B can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg and violate personhood, explains Mary Ziegler, an abortion law historian.”

The potential GOP field is already making extreme abortion bans a priority in their agendas as they race to out-MAGA each other.

Donald Trump: “Nobody has ever done more for right to life than Donald Trump. I put three Supreme Court justices who all voted, and they got something that they’ve been fighting for for 64 years.”

CNN: “Pence recently retweeted a statement from the anti-abortion advocacy organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America responding to Trump’s remarks in which the group urged the former president and other potential candidates to articulate an ‘ambitious consensus pro-life position’ and avoid an ‘Ostrich Strategy’ on abortion. ‘Well Said!’ Pence tweeted.”

WFLA: “Gov. Ron DeSantis said while speaking at Tallahassee event to announce the next year’s budget that he would sign a 6-week abortion ban, and permit-less carry, legislation into law for Florida.”

DC News Now: “Gov. Glenn Youngkin said he was ‘frustrated’ with state Democrats after a swift rejection Thursday of his proposed 15-week ban on abortion. He said he wants to revisit the issue that both Democrats and Republicans agree on the state.”

AP: “[Gov. Kristi Noem] and South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley released a letter to South Dakota pharmacists saying they are ‘subject to felony prosecution’ if they procure or dispense abortion-inducing drugs. The state bans all abortions except to save the life of the pregnant person.”
