This week, MAGA Republicans’ political stunts are facing scrutiny from their own party as questions rise about  the credibility of their politically motivated attacks and their “expert” witnesses.

Jim Jordan and James Comer’s own colleagues and staff are sounding the alarm about their weak, politically motivated attacks. 

Punchbowl: “‘There’s a big difference between oversight where you have expertise and oversight to churn out press releases,’ a House GOP aide said of Comer. ‘Everyone thought he’d learn from prior chairmen and work in a more coordinated way. It’s been quite the opposite.’

Washington Post: GOP unhappy with Jordan’s weaponization committee

Washington Post: “‘There is a feeling right now that this will simply be a Fox News clip generator — this really needs to be a comprehensive, well-resourced examination of the security state,’ said a person familiar with the committee’s operations who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly. ‘It can’t be a way for members to get three- to five-minute hits on the Sean Hannity show. If they want this to be real, it has to be done right.’”

Axios: “Critics say Jordan has been hampered by his off-the-cuff style, lack of structure and separation between Judiciary and its ‘weaponization’ subcommittee — and a tendency to make statements first and hope his investigative work will back them up.”

Oversight Republicans elevated an author who’s been praised by David Duke and has advocated for racist theories.

The Hill: “According to book reviews, Wade suggests that genetic differences may help explain why some people live in tribal societies and some in advanced civilizations, why African-Americans are allegedly more violent than whites and why the Chinese may be good at business.”

And Oversight Chair James Comer followed up his previous attacks on President Biden’s son with laments that Trump didn’t bomb a U.S. ally.

The Daily Beast: “House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer invoked the late son of President Joe Biden on Tuesday, lamenting that Beau Biden was never prosecuted over an investigation into illegal contributions involving his father’s 2008 presidential campaign. […] Comer’s invocation of the president’s late son runs contrary to the GOP congressman’s repeated claims that he’s not interested in digging into any Bidens but the president himself.”

This comes as reports showed that the so-called whistleblowers providing testimony to the Judiciary Committee may not actually be federally identified whistleblowers, have espoused conspiracy theories about the January 6 insurrection, and some are even bankrolled by Trump loyalists. 

New York Times: “The first three witnesses to testify privately before the new Republican-led House committee investigating the “weaponization” of the federal government have offered little firsthand knowledge of any wrongdoing or violation of the law […] Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, the chairman of the panel, has so far relied on people who do not meet the definition of a whistle-blower and who have engaged in partisan conduct that calls into question their credibility.”

CNN: “Separately, several other supposed whistleblowers who have not come in for interviews were suspended from the FBI for being at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 […] This is a point Jordan has not shied away from […] Right-wing opinions about the January 6 attack appear to be a consistent throughline among the three individuals that have come forward so far.”

New York Times: “Mr. O’Boyle and Mr. Friend both testified that they had received financial support from Kash Patel, a Trump loyalist and former high-ranking official in the former president’s administration.”
