Ron DeSantis Team Doubles Down on His Support for National Abortion Ban
August 24, 2023
In front of a primetime audience in Milwaukee last night, Ron DeSantis doubled down on his extreme anti-abortion agenda. DeSantis supports a national abortion ban and earlier this year signed one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country.
Last night, Ron DeSantis laid out his extremely unpopular anti-abortion agenda in an effort to out-MAGA his Republican primary opponents.
Bret Baier: “Just to be clear, governor. Would you sign a six-week ban federally?”
DeSantis: “I’m going to stand on the side of life… I will support the cause of life as governor and as president.”
DeSantis: “I was proud to sign the heartbeat bill.”
DeSantis campaign press release: “DeSantis has said that he will be a pro-life president and wants to sign pro-life legislation.”
DeSantis previously endorsed a national abortion ban after opening the door to banning abortion nationwide just hours after he launched his presidential campaign.
DeSantis: “I’m a pro-life governor. I’ve signed pro-life legislation. I’ll be a pro-life president. … Of course, there’ll be executive actions.”
DeSantis: “Dobbs returned the issue to the elected representatives as a people. And so I think that there’s a role for both the federal and the state.”
NBC News: “When asked if he would ‘veto any sort of federal bill that tries to put a nationwide ban in place,’ DeSantis replied, ‘We will be a pro-life president and we will support pro-life policies.’”
Tucker Carlson: “You signed a ban on abortion after six weeks in Florida. Would you do the same as president, nationally?”
DeSantis: “Well, I’m very proud to say Kim Reynolds is here and she signed a great heartbeat bill today. We were able to do that in Florida. We had a lot of opposition to that. I’m proud to have been a pro-life governor and I will be a pro-life president, so of course I want to sign pro-life legislation.”
Earlier this year, DeSantis signed one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country that bans the procedure before many women even know they’re pregnant.
NBC News: “Ron DeSantis quietly signs Florida’s 6-week abortion ban into law”
South Florida Sun-Sentinel: “Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to sign one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country could cost him votes if he runs for president, political operatives said Friday, and doing it in a private event late at night suggests he’s well aware of that. … The bill bans most abortions after six weeks before most women even know they’re pregnant. It provides exceptions for victims of rape or incest for up to 15 weeks but requires they prove it by providing a copy of a restraining order, police report, medical record, or other documents.”
