In response to Tim Scott’s endorsement of Donald Trump, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement: 

“Tim Scott centered his own campaign around banning abortion nationwide, and now he’s endorsing Donald Trump because he knows Trump is a MAGA extremist just like him who is hellbent on ripping away freedoms from women across America. Scott’s endorsement of Donald Trump is only the latest example of MAGA extremism exerting complete control over the Republican Party. It speaks volumes about Trump’s commitment to banning abortion that he is touting the endorsement of one of the most outspoken anti-abortion extremists in the leadup to a primary in one of the most pro-choice states in the country, days before the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and the same week that Scott’s campaign was praised by a radical anti-abortion activist. No matter how many MAGA minions fall in line behind Trump, his extreme and dangerous anti-freedom vision is a losing agenda that voters will reject again this November.”

Tim Scott supports Trump’s crusade to ban abortion across the country – he repeatedly promised to sign the most restrictive national abortion ban possible if he were president.

Shelby Talcott, Semafor: “I think the candidates that did the best job are not running anymore – Mike Pence and Tim Scott were unmatched,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, said during a press call after I asked which GOP candidate has done the best job in speaking about abortion.”

ABC News: “Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson called for a federal abortion ban after 15 weeks, a standard that leading anti-abortion groups like Susan B, Anthony Pro-Life America have been pushing for.”

Scott: “If I were president of the United States, I would literally sign the most conservative pro-life legislation that they can get through Congress.”

Scott: “I am 100% pro-life. When I am president of the United States, I will sign the most pro-life legislation the House and Senate can put on my desk. We should begin with a 15-week national limit.” 

Scott on whether he would sign Lindsey Graham’s proposed national abortion ban: “Every day, I would sign that bill into law. I would sign the most conservative pro-life legislation you can bring to my desk.”

Scott: “As president, I will sign the most pro-life legislation that reaches my desk. Our immediate priority should be passing a national 15-week limit on abortion while we support Republican-led states that do even more to protect life.” 

Scott: “I’ve cosponsored a 20-week bill. I’ve signaled very clearly I’d sign a 15-week bill.”

Trump: “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.” 

Trump on if he would sign a six-week national abortion ban: “I’m looking at all [options].”

Trump: “We’ll pick something that’s going to be very, very good for pro-life … I’m going to be in there pushing.”

Scott proudly boasts about being an “architect” of Trump’s MAGAnomics tax scam that Trump wants to make permanent, even though it rigged the economy for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations at the expense of America’s middle class.

Scott: “We make the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act tax cuts permanent.”

Scott: “I was one of the lead authors for the Republican tax reform bill. … That was just one bill. Imagine what we could do with an entire agenda.”

CNN: “[Tim Scott’s] 10-point plan also nods to one of the GOP front-runner’s signature legislative achievements – the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which Scott is promising to make permanent.” 

Scott: “When it comes to our economic challenges, we need to have a hard conversation about policies that actually work. In 2017, I was one of the architects of reforming the personal side of the tax code.”

Washington Post: “The former president’s closest economic advisers are plotting an aggressive new set of tax cuts to push on the campaign trail and from the Oval Office if he wins a second term. Trump and his advisers have discussed deeper cuts to both individual and corporate tax rates that would build on his controversial 2017 tax law … Further cutting corporate taxes … would primarily benefit large firms.”

Just like Trump, Scott has a consistent record of backing plans to end Social Security and Medicare as we know them.

Scott: “We also have to look at the overall entitlement state of our nation. … In order for us to tame the tiger, we’re going to have to take a serious look at the overall entitlement state that we have.”

Washington Post: “Other potential entrants in the Republican primary, such as … Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.) … also voted for Ryan’s budget when they were in Congress.

“‘There’s no doubt that we have to wrestle this beast to the ground and do the right thing,’ Scott said on Fox News in 2012. ‘The fact is that if we don’t start having a real conversation about people in their 40s and younger about the transformation of the system, it won’t be available for folks now in their 20s and 30s.’”

Scott on Social Security and Medicare: “We’re going to have to come to the table and have that conversation, and start making very difficult choices.”

Washington Post: “His avowed stance, however, is at odds with Trump’s own record as president: Each of his White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.”

Trump’s FY18, FY19, FY20, and FY21 budgets each proposed billions of dollars in cuts to Social Security programs.

2019 and 2020: Trump proposed budgets that included hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare.

CNN: “Trump previously backed policies on Social Security for which he’s now attacking DeSantis, calling the program a ‘Ponzi scheme’”

“Former President Donald Trump once backed raising the retirement age to 70 and called for privatizing Social Security which he called a ‘Ponzi scheme’ – two positions he has hammered Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for supporting as a former member of Congress and congressional candidate. … but a CNN KFile review found Trump himself also once praised Ryan on Medicare, along with the 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney, without praising their specific policy proposal, which called for similar changes to Ryan’s plan.”

Scott supported Trump’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act that would jeopardize health care coverage for millions of Americans, and Scott has also been a staunch opponent of Medicaid expansion. 

New York Times: Tim Scott voted for all three major Republican-led proposals to repeal the Affordable Care Act in 2017.

CNN: “Non-expansion state Republicans, on the other hand, have voiced opposition to any program that allows expansion states to receive more money in the future. ‘The reality of it is there is no way to get this done if you don’t make whole those states that were more fiscally responsible and did not expand,’ Sen. Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, a state that didn’t expand Medicaid, told reporters last week.”
