In response to Donald Trump’s campaign chief telling prospective donors to not take Trump’s own words seriously, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement: 

“Donald Trump’s aides know his rhetoric is dangerous and divisive – that’s why they’re now desperately trying to cover for his constant ‘offensive’ rhetoric with donors. But even if Trump’s rich backers buy that line, voters aren’t sold. Trump has a track record that proves he will act on his own words and implement his extreme MAGA platform if he ever gets back in office. In 2016, he campaigned on a reckless anti-freedom agenda of overturning Roe v. Wade, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and enacting a ‘total and complete’ Muslim ban – all of which he pushed for while in office. The next time Trump’s aides try to spin his own words, they ought to check the tape on Trump’s own efforts to follow through on the most extreme and unpopular salvos of his MAGA agenda.”

CNBC: “A top advisor to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign has a message for some of the wealthiest Republican donors in the country: Don’t take the former president’s divisive rhetoric too seriously.”

“Wiles encouraged the powerful donors to essentially ignore Trump’s more offensive remarks … Wiles conceded to the donors that Donald Trump is going to say things people don’t like.”

Trump campaigned on reversing Roe v. Wade – his hand-picked Supreme Court justices overturned Roe, allowing him to deliver on his threat to rip away freedoms from women across the country. 

CNBC: “Donald Trump said the overturning of the landmark Supreme Court decision giving women the right to abortion ‘will happen, automatically,’ if he is elected president and gets to appoint justices to the high court.

“‘I am pro-life,’ Trump said during Wednesday night’s presidential debate when asked whether he wanted that decision, Roe v. Wade, reversed by the Supreme Court.”

Reuters: “Former President Donald Trump delivered on a campaign promise on Friday when the conservative U.S. Supreme Court majority he cemented overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.”

CNBC: “Trump takes credit for end of Roe v. Wade after his 3 Supreme Court justice picks vote to void abortion rights”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Rolling Stone: “Trump Says He’s ‘Proud’ to Have ‘Terminated’ Abortion Rights”

Trump: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”

Trump: “Getting rid of Roe v. Wade was an incredible thing for pro-life because it gave pro-life something to negotiate with. Pro-life had absolutely nothing, being stuck in Roe v. Wade, to negotiate with. … And look, everybody that was president wanted to get rid and tried to get rid of Roe v. Wade … For fifty years, this has been going on. I was able to do it, and I was very honored to do it.”

When he was in office, Trump came up just one vote short in Congress from achieving his goal of repealing the Affordable Care Act.

The Hill: “On the campaign trail, Trump has doubled down on his promise to repeal the ACA, a feat he fell one vote short of in 2017.”

Trump: “I will get health care. I’m one vote short of health care. I’ll get health care.”

Reuters: “The most previous attempt to repeal Obamacare fell one vote short in July, in a humiliating setback for Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.”

Trump campaigned in 2016 on an extreme promise to enact a “total and complete” Muslim ban, which he implemented as one of his first actions in office.
