DNC Statement Celebrating Labor Day
September 2, 2024
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Labor Council Chair Stuart Appelbaum issued the following statement celebrating Labor Day:
“Working people built our country. Today, we celebrate their countless successes and immeasurable contributions to our society and thank them for their tireless efforts. The Democratic Party is proud to defend and protect working Americans by raising wages, lowering costs, and strengthening labor laws. As our workers pave the way for the United States’ leadership in innovation and creativity, we’re honored to show our boundless gratitude and support.
“While Democrats are committed to empowering working Americans, Donald Trump and extreme MAGA Republicans are determined to make their lives harder. Trump wants to build an economy that works for large corporations and his ultra-wealthy friends. He will undermine unions, gut the Affordable Care Act and Social Security, and cost middle-class families nearly $4,000 a year through his extreme tax plan. Trump’s long history of stiffing workers and scamming hard-working people speaks for itself. He’s not fighting for working Americans: He’s only fighting for himself.
“President Biden and Vice President Harris are leading the most pro-union administration in history. They’re building the economy from the bottom up and middle out, helping to create over 800,000 manufacturing jobs, and cracking down on large corporations that take advantage of hard-working people. Democrats nationwide are tireless advocates for labor, fighting to pass the PRO Act and protect the right to organize. As the first president to join a picket line, President Biden knows what it means to show up for unions, and Vice President Harris will continue his legacy.
“This Labor Day, Democrats are honored to be the party of working people, and we will fight to protect their rights, empower unions, and help them get ahead. As Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans continue to leave working families behind, now is the time to fight for the rights and needs of workers. This November, it’s essential that we vote for the candidates who will go to the mat to protect workers’ rights and speak out for working families: Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz.”
