Donor Stories
Judith Deiro
Judith Deiro, Ph.D., grew up on an apple farm in Yakima — a special, close-knit community in the heart of central Washington.
From a young age, Dr. Deiro advocated for the success of Democrats. Her political activism was inspired by the leadership of her uncle, a sociology professor at Oklahoma State University during the social justice movements of the 1960s. As a college student at Oklahoma State, she worked on the off-campus paper, fought for racial equity, stood against the Vietnam War, and cast her very first vote in 1968 for George McGovern.
In 1977, after eight years in direct social services, Dr. Deiro began her lifetime career as a professor. Devoted to helping students confront and address social and personal problems, Dr. Deiro ultimately prepared hundreds of individuals for various roles in the helping professions. In 2015, Dr. Deiro retired from Western Washington University, Human Services Program, and is now politically active, inspiring others to be politically active, and pursuing her creative hobbies of writing, drawing, and beading.
Dr. Deiro’s lifetime passion is to help people reach their fullest potential. When reflecting on her life in service, Dr. Deiro recognizes the ideas and values embedded in her education, her working career, and the Democratic Party as most influential in helping her reach for her fullest potential. For this reason, she decided to name the Democratic National Committee as a beneficiary of her estate — to thank them for making her life better, and to support the younger generations of Democrats as they continue to advocate for the ideas and political positions she treasures.
