In response to the news today that Medicare drug plan premiums are expected to rise significantly, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

“First, Donald Trump gutted Medicaid with his billionaire-first budget bill — now, his administration is planning to slash Medicare benefits, increasing premiums and prescription drug prices for seniors and families. Trump repeatedly promised that he would protect Medicare and Medicaid and ‘bring prices down, starting on Day One.’ Six months into his presidency, he’s taking away health care from millions of Americans and causing health care and drug prices to soar. Promises made, promises broken.” 

NEW: Medicare Part D premiums are set to rise after Donald Trump decided to cut Medicare spending. 

Wall Street Journal: “Medicare Part D Drug Plan Premiums Set to Rise” 

“Premiums for Medicare drug plans are set to increase sharply next year, due to rising costs, regulatory changes and cutbacks to a subsidy program.

“The subsidy program, which sent extra federal funds to the private insurers that offer the drug benefit—known as Part D—had largely shielded seniors from rising monthly bills in 2025.

“It pumped an extra $6.2 billion of federal payments into the Part D plans this year, according to a Medicare official. The Trump administration is set to cut spending on that program by about 40% in 2026.” 

This comes after Trump and Republicans passed their disastrous, billionaire-first budget to give the ultra-wealthy another round of tax handouts at the expense of working families. 

💸 Working Americans will lose $1,600 a year, while high-earners will see their incomes boosted by $12,000. 

🏥 17 million Americans could lose health insurance, a whopping 27% of nursing homes could be forced to close their doors, and more than 300 rural hospitals could close.

🍞 More than 22 million working families could lose some or all of their food benefits. 

🏠 Experts say it is “the most regressive tax and budget law in at least the past 40 years—and possibly ever.”

REMINDER: Trump repeatedly promised not to touch Medicaid and Medicare. 

Donald Trump: “We will take care of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security. We will take care of everything.” 

Trump: “Social Security, we’re going to take care of it beautifully; Medicare; and Medicaid. And we are going to save it … now we’ll be in charge, so we’re going to have no problem with Medicaid or Medicare or Social Security.” 

Trump: “No, no, we’re not going to be playing with Medicaid, only waste, fraud and abuse. Yeah, the Democrats have it wrong. Yeah, waste, fraud and abuse. In fact, if you look at what’s gone on, we’ve gone way back. We take care of Medicaid and take care of Medicare.”
